So far I am leaning towards the following (thanks partly to your feedback):

1. New Precision 7mm 08 Steyr (like what Sniper is selling)
-- I am assuming it is essentially a .308 Winchester case necked down to accept 7mm?
-- This should do fine for most small to medium sized game (up to say whitetailed deer)
2. New 12 Gauge Remington 870 Express tactical shotgun (with the powdercoat finish, 18.5")
-- This should do fine for most bird applications
-- This would also serve as a fun blaster toy!!
3. Used Anshultz Model 54 "Custom Target Match" .22 LR
-- Can you say accurate? :D
-- I might have to wait a bit on this one, as the top two may exhaust my $2000 budget, unless I can find a good deal!

What do you guys think?

I appreciate all the feedback, keep 'em coming!

if you really want a rifle to bring you up to deer i would go with 22-250, i dont care what anyone says 22-250 will kill deer at 500 yards, and is a deadly coyote gun

I seriously thought about the 22-250. They're a very popular gun in the UK to hunt foxes at long ranges. However, I also hear that barrels "burn out" in shorter duration -- the faster you push a bullet, the faster barrels degrade, a fact of life I guess.

I'm really excited about my first firearm purchase since my Reserve days, and want to make the right, "lasting" decisions. I would rather spend more for quality at the outset. :ANAL:

with enhancements in steel design they have corrected that problem if you buy a good gun buy a brand name manufacture, remember you get what you pay for, i have a friend with one and he had had that thing probably around 15 years and he shoots it almost every weekend, it has had 1000's of rounds down the barrel and that gun is a tack driver, if also you are worried about burning out the barrel stainless steel barrel is the way to go, just remember if you shoot the gun alot without given it time to cool down you will burn the barrel out on any, expecley the bigger the bullet the more cooling time, ie. you can shoot more shots between cool down with a .223 then with a .30-06,
also the first 17hmr's where known for burning out the barrels but they have corrected that problem
soo conclusion if i had to sell all my guns and keep just 1 it would be the .22-250

7mm-08 is good to take game larger than deer. Guys use 'em for moose too! You are correct that it is a necked down 308 case. It's kind of a modern equivilent to the 270 Win. I am reloading mine with necked down IVI 7.62 brass.

Sniper's Steyr's are gorgeous, I doubt you could go wrong there.

Hey guys, I thought I'd touch base and let you know what I ended up with, after a bit of buying and selling. Alot of your suggestions were taken into consideration. I miss airguns, and will likely buy another Diana.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions so far.
I am taking careful notes!
In terms of what I intend to hunt:
Canada Goose
Duck
Deer
Varmint

I still want enough versatility to take down other game.

First-off, looking at that heap of guns in the photo...I have 2 things to say. 1. I'd say hunting isn't the driving force in your decision-making, and, 2. You have/had more than $2,000 to spend. :shock: Assuming you still want any input on your original question, here goes;

Goose/Duck~as others have said, a Remington 870 12 gauge that will accept chokes...make sure it'll take 3 or 3-1/2"ers.

Deer/Varmints (groundhogs/coyotes)~Savage .243 bolt-action with a good scope (adjustable magnification up to 15-16x) and Harris bipod

If you have any cash left, and you won't have much (assuming you're going new) I'd get a new or used Savage Mark II .22lr bolt action for plinking, REALLY small game, practice, etc.

Good luck!
