I will be going for my PAL in a few weeks and expect to have my licence before the summer. I have plenty of experience with airguns and have fired a few weapons while in the reserves (FN C1A1, C7, SMG Sterling, etc.). I want to purchase a few "muti-purpose" guns to allow me the flexibility to go on the odd hunting trip with friends or punch paper at the nearby rod and gun club

Oh, and as the title says, I don't want to go over $2000. Can I get quality, reliability and accuracy for that amont of cash? I'm thinking I need one good 12 gauge and one good center fire. I also wouldn't mind a good rimfire. Your informed suggestions on models and actions would be appreciated.

Nice budget.

Contact Sniper and grab one of the beautiful Steyr's he dug up (I'd go with 7mm/08). Then find yourself a Remignton 870, brand new - don't get an old one because you'll want the screw in chokes (has to be 12 gauge). Fill the cabinet with a Cooey 75, .22 cal rimmie off the equipment exchange on CGN - don't pay more than $100 and pick the nicest one you can find.

This will cost you about $2000 exactly.

TikkaT3 and some nice glass. Semi's are nice but cost alot in ammo..

SKS's can be had for 50-300 used-new. dirty simple and easy to maintain.

A 22-semi's can offer a ridiculous amount of customization..and are great for everything...

not a fan of shotty's so i can't recommend anything.

11 Field Regiment RCA

Spent a few years firing the big 105mm guns, but had training in small arms as well. My favourite was the Fabrique Nationale (FN) C2A1 full automatic. I tore up a few paper Ivans with that beast!

For a basic 'meat and potatos' no nonsense shotgun, you can't go wrong with a Rem 870 Express.
If you want something a little higher on the scale, try a Browning BPS(bottom load and eject for left or right handed shooter)
For centerfire, do you want it to handle all sorts of game including moose or do you just want a really hot round for shooting coyote and groundhogs? This will make a difference in your round selection.
Same applies for rimfire. Everyone loves a .22 cal LR but if you want to shoot something a little more interesting, maybe look at a 17HMR or .22 mag? Just a few things to think about because with $2000, you can get yourself some great quality guns you won't regret buying.

cant go wrong with a nice remington 700sps. for centerfire and cal depends on your needs/wants. around 800$ some glass maybe 400$
shotty used mosberg or rem 870 for around 300$-500$
.22 old cooey single shot best bet arunder 100$ and money to spare for ammo or a reloading kit.

It might cost you near your entire budget, but for a nice conversation piece and a little bit of history in your locker, you might want to look into a combination gun. They're a little rare from what i have seen, but a half decent 12g/.308 breakbarrel combo can be had for around $1500 if you do some looking around. a .22lr or .22wmr/.410 will run around $700-800. With that, you could take care of your rimmie/shotgun or cf/shotgun with one purchase, and have a little left over for the other :)

Savage makes very dependable, service oriented (read: not always the prettiest) guns in all actions/calibres that are quite affordable. Their bolt actions are amazing little shooters. As far as a shotgun, the remington and mossberg pumps will do just about any job you'd want them to, with the option of getting a rifled barrel for slugs down the road (or might even come with one)

Where do you live and what do you plan on hunting? That will affect your centerfire choice. If you plan on geese or turkey, that'll affect your shotgun choice.

You could probably get 4 or 5 guns with that $2000 if you play your cards right. Savage has gun/scope combos all over the place for about $460. 10-22 is a nice choice for .22 and the Remingtion 870 12 guage would be a nice three gun combo.

Personally, me in Ontario, I would go 10/22, .223 Savage or Stevens, 308, 30-06 or 300 Savage or Stevens, and a 870 wingmaster for ducks/grouse and maybe an NEF/H&R turkey gun in 3.5" 12 guage.

10/22 is about $311
2 savages = 469 each scoped
used 870 = $300, (EE in Gunnutz)
NEF turkey gun = 200 at Epps

that's $1749 before taxes.

Or you could drop one gun and get a reloading setup.

At what ranges do you want to punch paper? What type of game do you want to hunt? What type of actions do you want?

.22lr - remington 597 or ruger 10/22

12g - mossberg 500 or remington 870

7.62x39 - sks or cz 858

Choose 3 outa the 6 that I just mentioned and you will cover all your bases without going over your budget, you can't go wrong with any of them.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions so far.
I am taking careful notes!
In terms of what I intend to hunt:
Canada Goose
Duck
Deer
Varmint

I still want enough versatility to take down other game.

I hunt birds with a Stoeger 2000 semi auto in 12 gauge. I have had good luck with it, kind of a cheap Benelli.
