Might just try building a duct seal trap! But whats involved in keeping them maintained? Im not interested in spending tons of time into digging pellets out of the mud everytime I shot. A trap with litte noise would allow to me shot when the wife works nights! What are people using for materials for making duct seal traps? I`m renovating a house so 1\2 plywood peices are all around.

If you don't feel like digging the lead out, then you don't need to. I dig it out every once in a while so i can use it for melting down into sabots for my trapmaster. Best pre-made trap, as already mentioned above, would be an old electrical panel. You can use the folded metal edges for attaching your targets with a magnet. Line the back with duct seal to absorb most of the sound. HTH.

One layer will stop low powered rifles.
For medium and high powered rifles, you will need 2+ layers.

How ofter you need to maintain it will depend on a few things:
#1 How hard or soft the duct seal is. I have seen some that were so soft that a low power AP will shoot half way thru the duct seal. And I have seen some that were so hard that the pellet barely goes into the duct seal.
#2 How good a shot you are. The tighter the group, the deeper you will make the hole.
#3 How much power you are shooting with.
#4 Do you move the target around the trap or do you always shoot in the same place

Repeated shots in the same place with enough power to make holes will gradually make the hole deeper until you reach the back of the box.

For my trap and my low powered AP, rather than making a hole, the lead accumulates into a flat lead pancake. At a certain point I have to clean off the lead pancake as the pellets will start to bounce back rather than sticking to the pancake.

For the trap at my fathers house, with the SOFT duct seal, I have to fix the trap every 5 or 10 shots so I don't hit the back of the trap.

Bottom line, YOU need to determine for YOUR trap, guns and how you shoot, how often you need to clean the trap. It can be a few dozen shots or several hundred shots, it all depends.

yup, home depot has them in their electrical dept. $2.50/pound.

Was in Home Depot (Mississauga, On) yesterday looking for this stuff. The only thing they could show me was plumbers putty at $13/can. Probably need two cans to do the job...

Guess I'll try Reno and Lowes next time I'm there. For now I'll keep shredding stacks of old magazines...

I use wooden wine boxes with the front cut out. I fill them with duct seal and use a clip board clip to hold the targets. This time of year the LCBO has lots of wine that comes in a box, or they sell boxes that hold 2 bottles for around 5.00

Finally got around to making a couple of silent traps. Used 7/16 OSB I had left over from building my garage, with the use of some gorilla glue and my pnuematic finishing nailer I brought them to life. Not the highest of quality but will do the trick in the basement, just waiting for the paint to dry. Each holds 6 bricks of duct seal and are roughly 11 * 8 3/4 * 4 inches, Im very impressed with the duct seals abilitiy at stoppping lead. Wife cant even hear me firing the alecto in the basement, going to enjoy the cold thid year!

I've used a cardboard box filled with bubble wrap. It stops BB's from my "under 400" BB pistols but I wouldn't try the .22 pellet rifle on it.

That clay or putty idea sounds about right for a backing material. I'll have to start looking for that in the hardware stores.

If my memory serves me right, from past years of electrical jobs I sure the black duct seal is a bit denser the the brown/grey stuff. Silent trap is the way to go, for indoor shooting!
