Well I went to walmart last night and they had the Crosman 2240, and it was on clearance for $47!! :mrgreen:

I know this gun has many options for mods, more so than most air guns. But what would be the best mod, the one you'd do first? A longer barrel? A steel breech? What's the best one?

Steel breach is good. If you put on a longer barrel you may need to lighten the hammer spring to stay under 500.

I was thinking I'd likely change the breech first, where's the cheapest? And I don't have a chronograph to know if it went above 500, is it still prohibited if you don't know the speed?

Congratulations! You made an excellent deal!
A steel breech and the 10” barrel. It will stay below 500fps. I have one exactly like that and I chronied it a number of times. Check D&L Airguns, Airgun Source and Specialty Shooting Sports Outdoors for availability.
And yes if it goes above 500fps it is RESTRICTED (not prohibited) and you would need a Restricted Possession and Acquisition License (RPAL). But like I said if you don't exceed the barrel length 10" it will stay under 500fps. With a longer barrel it would go above 500fps and then you would have to lighten the hammer spring like paddyfritz said. But it doesn't make sense anyways because you don't gain anything.

steel breech is by far cheapest at D&L airgun;

D&L is great, but shipping outside of western Canada runs a bit high sometimes.
Scopes & Ammo has them for 41.99

Genuine Crosman .22 caliber Steel Breech Kit
[CR-2240SBPK] $41.99

Used to stabilize the barrel and allow mounting of a scope or other accessories to the breech, this is a "must have" for any Crosman 1322, 2240, 2260, 2289 or other Crosman products where a .22 caliber barrel is used.

Kit includes the breech, bolt with handle and hex keys to remove the stock breech and install this unit.

This kit can also be used when converting a .177 caliber Crosman airgun to .22 caliber.

Right, Scopes and Ammo! Forgot about them. They also have a 10” .22cal barrel that would fit perfect.

The first mod you should do and it will not cost you a penny is a trigger job polish all the contact points in the trigger group this will give you a smoother trigger pull

Yeah, once I priced out all the parts I wanted to mod an 2240, easily approaching $400. :shock:

I'm new to this mod and tune thing, but I thought the idea was to not take away material and only to use polishing compounds??
