greetings

this evening, i've been testing different pellets in my 34 at 30 yards, i determined from the beginning that this rifle likes JSB exacts, but i thought i would run some more tests now that the rifle is well broken in

i tested crosman hollow points, RWS superdomes, H&N field targets, i posted the results below(the jsb card has been shot yesterday)

but the real observation i made is not the results i got, but how the rifle shot after the test, i've been shooting JSB's in dime size groups consistently with no adjustements for over a month, but after shooting 45 different pellets(some with harsh recoil) coming back to the JSB's has shown my rifle to now have a different POI  , i re-adjusted the scope 5 clicks lower and 1 click left putting it back to zero, my theory is that the harsher recoil either made the scope slip, or moved the scope tube inside...thoughts

It is a very rare day when the guys shooting field target with spring guns do not have to zero the scope before a match. There are so many factors that affect spring gun performance that they resign themselves to this each shooting session.

Different pellets have different degrees of hardness in the lead or can indeed be made of slightly different alloys. They lead up the barrel of the rifle differently and so can cause differences in poi from what you expect. I suppose if you're testing pellets it might be a good idea to go from softer lead pellets to harder ones (e.g. go from JSBs, which are soft, to H&Ns to Crosman Premiers) so that the barrel leading changes incrementally.

Properly testing out different pellets takes a lot of time and effort, especially with springers.

The biggest factor to get a true indication of a specific pellet's accuracy is to make sure the barrel is properly cleaned between each change of pellet. This takes time and then the barrel must be leaded in with that new pellet.

Shooting a springer compounds the complexity, as with a change in pellet you also have a change in shot cycle. So while the 'trial' pellet may appear to be less accurate, it might actually be more accurate if you change the way you hold/shoot your rifle.

I can also confirm what Mac stated; when you shoot a springer, get used to the POI changing each time you pull it out. The change may not be apparent unless you're shooting beyond 50 yards though, and it may only be a little bit, but it's almost always there.

Until you reach a point where you are striving after that last ounce of accuracy, just pick a pellet that shoots reasonably well, then work on shooting your springer in a consistent manner!

in testing the best pellet for a particular rifle, i'm aware that it will most likely have a different POI, my 34 was set at zero for shooting JSB exacts, when i shot other brands, i expected them to group somewhere other then the center and that's of no concern really, what i look for is grouping overall, had i found one that grouped better then the usual JSB, i would have adjusted the scope to zero with the new found pellet, i did not however consider cleaning the barrel after each brand change....good point :)

but the real reason i posted is the fact that the 34's POI had changed after the test despite using the exacts once more, so i was wondering of someone else had experienced this, i guess you offered one possible explanation, maybe the scope didn't change, maybe the new lead residue in the barrel changed the POI, and now i've adjusted it to compensate, hum !
