He's probably reading a patent date off the bbl.

My best guess is we're looking at a '93.
As far as lever styles go, Marlin did anything the customer wanted. Barrel selection was up to the customer as well- 1/2 oct as pictured, full oct, or straight round were available. That crescent butt is a nice touch- and how most of these guns were sold. There were the odd few that ordered a shotgun style butt- the operative word here is few.
I'm extremely doubtful a pistol cartridge would be chambered in a bbl that long...
