Here's a little advice from someone that has experimented with exploding targets. If you use to much powder these have the potential to shoot the pellet right back at you. It's happened to me twice the last time it came back with good velocity and hit the wall behind me right beside my head.I keep making them though.
The ones at Canadian Tire work great outside.

So, all I had around was a book of matches. I removed the coating off the heads and scraped the back of the book off. Mixed it together at 2:1 as was mentioned. I then put it between paper and struck it with no success. I will re - investigate this again later when I can get a box of matches.

canadiantire has box of 250 matches RedBird brand for $5.49 each Its $6.20 after tax. 12.40 for two. Makes ~200 targets worth per pack. Staples has pack of stickers red, 480 pack for $5.95, $6.72 after tax..

12.40 + 6.72 is $19.12 for 400~ targets (maybe a bit more if you put little)

So it's about 4.8c per target.. So it's pretty much like shooting at nickels just much much more work :)

Those are "strike anywhere" matches, different than the ones he uses. When I was a kid I used strike anywhere match heads in my cap gun (they had a white tip), I also shot them out of my airgun at a brick wall, made a nice bang :-).

That was 58 years ago - yet it seemingly happened only yesterday!

About 40 for me. It's amazing I didn't blow myself up with some of the mixtures I came up with!

I bought an old pellet rifle once, wouldn't cock though.
I dismantled it and discovered the spring was broken and evidence that somebody was shooting nails.
