Excellent read RC. I've been shooting an HW70 for the last couple of weeks trying to figure out what grip it likes. I'll be giving it a try. My 2"groups at 10 paces from a low powered spring piston air pistol sure are signs that I need to practice .

I read that a year or so ago, tried it out and persuaded myself I was getting better at 7 yards with a 1911 BB shooter. I'm not sure though, that story implies one-handed shooting and I continue to shoot with a standard two handed thumb over thumb hold (it is completely different to the HW40 but the way).
Re-reading it now, he claims that guy turned up, picked up a random, sloppy pistol and made a one inch group at 25 yards with 30 shots? I like a lot of what BB/Mr Gaylord writes but think he might have been inhaling too many fumes on the range that day...
Also, having since fired a real 45ACP, I cannot imagine holding it with "one finger". It would probably land on the ground about 30 feet behind me (the pistol that is, not the shot, but maybe both...).

I shoot with two hands with my P-1s. With my left hand - I'm right handed - I support the trigger guard with my index finger. RC

Very nice indeed. What scope and mount do you have there? I left mine open; do you find it gets in the way of cocking it? That needs a bit of technique too - I do it by laying the underside on my leg and levering from there. Leaves a nice bruise after a few hours though...

Hobbyman - you said "used" - is it a newer one with fibreoptic sights or an older one with regular sights (and does it have the dual selection power settings when cocking?). I wish mine had regular sights, not keen on fibreoptics.

It's a newer version with fiber sights . I plan on putting a micro dot sight on it. So it won't really matter .

I too cock it on my thigh, using my right thumb to push the lever forward. In the case of these pistols, time spent pays dividends regarding accuracy. When I bought my first one, my targets looked like I was shooting a shotgun. I stuck with it. RC

What scope and mounts RC? The grips are not standard either, look a little like those on the KJW KP-07.

I use BKL mounts on my P-1s because they're self-centering. The dovetails on an HW45 are wider than what's typical on airguns, and non-centering mounts would be off center. The scope is a BSA 2x. Any pistol scope can be used since, unlike a break-barrel, an HW45's pistol piston moves to the rear of the pistol, and so, the recoil is more like a rimfire pistol. Pachmayr combat grips. RC

Thanks for that, good to know - especially about the mounts as I know the rail is an odd size. I see D&L do them.

As far as I know, Pachmayr no longer makes the combat grips, but a search will usually find some. They work well in helping to maintain a consistent grip. I use them on all 3 (.177, .20, .22) of my P-1s. RC

Please advise what those Beeman/HW pistols make for velocity in .177 and .22.

I have four HW45s. I have three in .22 (standard, STL and Silver Star versions) and they will put out 5-6 fpe. The STL is a little slower and is right at 5 fpe but my standard and Silver Star models are closer to 6fpe with RWS Superdomes and JSB Exacts. I also have an HW45 Black Star in .177 and it is right at 4.1 fpe with most JSB pellets.

Guys! Please!! I thought I had achieved when I put down the $500+ "investment" that is the (single) HW45. Now I feel like I need to get some more...!
I put the Pearce grips on mine, I like the woodwork so it was good to keep the originals and this rubber grip goes underneath them. I quite like it. It averages around 450 fps with Hobbys (.22).
Hobbyman - we appear to have hijacked your thread and turned it into a HW45 appreciation post. Not entirely off topic I suppose, you just have to post pics of yours when it arrives.

I don't hunt much anymore, but if I did want to use a pistol I would use my Brocock Atomic in .22 or my Crosman 1701P Silhouette in .177. Both are topped with HW pistol scopes, very accurate, OK in the cold and hit hard.

I have both of those pistols too. They would be good choices if you were going the PCP route.
