Neat Project! Thanks for sharing.

FTP(FlatTopPiston)?
Factory piston is most efficient under 500psi and deteriorates quickly past this point, whereas, FTP maintains ~peak~ efficiency to much higher pressures(over 1.5kpsi in my experiments).
Very neat project. . . .

Good to know, yep it's the factory pump. Mellonair has a flat top delrin piston for quite cheap. Anyone have experience with his piston and do you think it'd be worth paying a little extra for one with a felt oiler or unnecessary?

Check the where to buy in Canada page on this forum. There were some made up last spring if IIRC.

If you are doing 100 pumps at a time, brass or aluminum might be the sturdier, lasting choice.

Right good point. I pmed Derek Vinyard, haven't heard back yet from him. Do you know what kind he makes by chance? Thanks for help by the way!

Delrin for sure. I have 4 sets from him and they are well made. I think I may even have aluminum from him- again well made. These used to be an in stock item at scopes and ammo, but it's been a while.

I'm going to have to do a survey of my pumpers- I know I need at least 2 flat top pistons here- possibly 4....

Ok! Maybe enough that he might be interested in making a few. I'd need two because I am doing the same mods on my dad's gun. I wonder if he'd put an aluminum face on them.

Interesting thing I learned today, which you all probably already knew but never really clicked in for me til today - a gun shooting at 495 fps at 1200psi is way quieter than a gun shooting the same speed at 700psi. It's definitely not the hammer strike that's the difference because I am turning the spring tension on the hammer up at 1200psi to compensate for the increase in pressure in the valve. It has to be the greater amount of air needed at the lower pressure to get the pellet to 495fps

Derek Vinyard - flat top pistons - "If you need an aluminum piston for a serious build, I make them too."

Thanks lleader, I actually pmed him a couple times and never got a response, so he must be busy. That sure is a great price he was doing them for! Only thing is I have heard delrin heats up and can get damaged after 40 pumps or so. He may be willing to put a metal face on it though so I was hoping to hear from him.. There is another fellow on the forum here I contacted and he said he'd make one up for me. Really nice guy, has a website - innovativemachining.ca.

Oops I see you were specifically quoting him saying he would make aluminum ones, sorry for missing that. Doesn't look like he's posted for awhile on the forum so maybe he never got my pm.

Anyway I'm happy to have met Ron, super guy to talk to, makes repeating breeches as well for these guns, if anyone is interested. I'd buy one if I had the money!

Well, I found the sweet spot on my RVA. Actually drilled and tapped a 3/8 hole in the end cap and put a 3/8 bolt and nut on so I can lock it into place and big enough I can change springs without taking off the breech.
Anyway got it locked in shooting from 490 to 460 for 52 shots starting at 1050 psi down to a little over 500psi. Now I can pump it up anywhere in that range and I know I won't be shooting over the legal limit. Nice non pal hunting gun, with on board pump!

I've got a 760 tube I've modified to fit the 13xx trigger frame and am planning to put an 18" barrel on it to make a higher powered pumper pcp. I might try a 30 or 40g cartridge on it, see how those are to pump up. I have a flat top piston on order, so in meantime flat topped my valve for the 760 tube and filled the end of my extra piston cup with jbweld to make a temporary flat top piston to try it out. Waiting for another Asa to come in the mail so I can try it out!
