This HW98 in .22 rifle is currently running approx. 14.4 in FPE.

Does anyone know if there a hop-up kit that could get this rifle up to 17.4fpe? That would be a 16 gr. pellet at 700fps. I would prefer 800fps.

The Maccari Hornet mk v kit was able to do that,of course guns vary a bit..kelly

I get 740fps with the 18gr JSB's and the Vmach kit from sss but I see their out of stock.

Here's one report on a 95/R9 .177.

After installing the PG2 kit in my R9 it shoots smooth and twang free. Why Weiherauch doesn't build them from the factory to shoot shot like this is beyond me. $89 (US & no ship) isn't cheap, but it transforms the rifle. Worth every penny. Don't settle for a twangy air rifle!

I suppose 17.4 is attainable with tuning and a heavy spring but I never tried, I prefer my HW95 to use the oem spring and its more tame nature, plus mine is 177 so even less need to have that velocity. I consider it more of a very nice but easy to shoot gun like a 22LR, if I want more power I grab a different gun.
I think beyond 17 would be difficult but I suppose possible. Considering the guns displacement I imagine 19ftlbs might even be possible, but highly unlikely. I think 17 is a more realistic max goal, but >17 would be easier. It's like souping up a car, every HP costs more and is more stressful than the last until a monetary limit or mechanical failure stops you. And like a car, you may not like how it behaves.
So I'd tune it and see how it reacts, then add a stronger spring and see how you like it. If you don't then simply put the oem spring back in, or try another. If all fails get the HW80, which is why it exists. Maybe the HW90 which is adjustable.
Also be wary that the increased spring strength will be more stressful on the scope, so if you have a nice one are you willing to risk it?

My HW97 needs no help, running around 880fps in .177, so shoots plenty flat to 55yards. I would like the .22 HW98 to come as close as possible without ruining accuracy.

Do you really need 16gr pellets? Would it be worth it to shoot 14.3 or even 13.4 JSB to get the trajectory you want? JSB have excellent BC so I doubt you'll lose anything there. I use 14.3gr almost exclusively, and certainly with anything <20ftlbs.

So I suppose you're going to get a spring, and Vortek is the only one have specs for.
Your oem 98 spring should be .810"OD x .122" wire x ~34 coils
Piston ID should be ~.870", plus piston liner: ~.012" thick.
Your oem guide OD should be ~.540" +- .005, so best to match the spring to that.

I'd get .125" or .128 wire, and .780" to .825OD. The thicker wire is obviously stronger, the larger the OD makes it weaker and the longer it is overall makes it stronger.
The Vortek 810125 seems like a good match but not a whole lot stronger. The 825128 is stronger and only a few thou looser on the guide than oem so not a biggie.
The Vortek "kit" uses the smaller 780125, so it'll be stronger than the 810125 due to it's smaller OD, but not as strong as the 825128.
If people are not complaining about the kit being too harsh then I suppose the 825128 is what I'd try.
I'd also make a plastic liner to put in the piston to dampen sound. Basically a poor mans Vortek kit. I make them from soda bottles but or whatever, works, and they work better that most people imagine. If you're unfamiliar I can send you details.
I'd order it max length with one end finished, then cut/finish the other end when I determine the max possible length that will fit in it. Or you can estimate. Vortek makes some stronger springs but I would test that 825128 first. Keep in mind yours has a 26mm bore, so if someone with a Diana 34 or similar says the 825128 is fine, know those have a 28mm bore and it makes a difference in how the gun handles it. The 34 compresses more air to higher psi pushing on more piston surface area, basically the 34 piston will be slowed down more than yours prior to breech impact, which is the root of the negatives you'll experience as spring strength goes up.
Actually; google the very popular Beeman R9 to see what springs people have tried. Same power plant. I'm sure most people just buy the Voretk kit but I'm sure someone has tried that spring, and maybe even heavier ones. Plus other brands...

.22 Predators weigh 16gr. Those are what I use for gophers. Currently, that pellet and the 19.09gr. Barracuda HP's are the most accurate pellets in this HW98. After the tune kit, if a different pellet is best, fine, I will use it instead. My Brocock likes both of these as well, and runs 20fpe with the Predator and a bit higher with the Barracuda. I( would like a flatter trajectory in the HW98- with a pellet it likes. We'll see after the tune.
If not happy, there is always the direction you show. As the kit is already on it's way, I'll go that route first.

Just checked, my HW98 gets only 680fps with 14.3gr. pellets for 14.7fpe and 603fps with 19.09's for 15.4fpe.
