I know what the actual airline regulations tell you ... that you have to declare your pellet gun. However, that declaration also includes a $50 fee.
I am also a retired airline employee but do not have "inside" information from the past 8 years. So, with that in mind, Travellers to international or transborder destinations would have their checked baggage x-rayed as part of the process. However, not for domestic travel.
Are there any currently active airline employees here that can state whether domestic bags get x-rayed now? I doubt bags are scanned/x-rayed for domestic travel due to the huge cost involved but in todays environment, who knows.
My reasons for asking is simple ... to carry a 2240 wrapped in a towel in my checked bag would set off huge red flags if x-rayed without a declaration and associated fees, however, the gun in question is not worth the return trip with a declaration both ways.
Does my question make sense?

Would't it be cheaper/easier to just ship it Canada Post?

I would say it may depend on the airline your travelling with. When I was working in northern Quebec, I travelled with two different airlines; one made you go through the full customs procedure, complete with X-rays, as if you were leaving the country, with the other it was like taking the bus for another city (which was the case - Montreal to Fermont). My best advice would be to ask the airline for their procedure, just to be sure.

I guess I'm just thinking/wishing what it used to be like. I was just talking to a friend that still works on the ramp and he claims that no, they do not x-ray domestic flights so it shouldn't be a problem BUT, if it was discovered, by however means, it would create a huge inconvenience, hassle, possible fine and who knows what else.
So ... I have to conclude that the best and most sensible solution would be to ship it to myself via Canada Post.
Hard to believe that I have hitchhiked with my .303 without causing any concern. But that was not yesterday and the world has changed considerably since then.

Sounds like it would be about the same price and less hassle to just buy a cheap one when you get to your destination to play around with. Unless you are talking about a gun shoot you are attending. Then mailing it back and forth would be the way to go. Even if you buy a cheap one and do end up liking it you could mail it back home when you leave. You go their occasionally leave it their for next time. CHEERS!

Having mine would be preferential since I have done some mods to it but logically and realistically, buy one there and leave it is the best option or Canada Post.Actually Westjet would cost me more as it would have to travel as second checked bag and with AC my first bag is free.
Canada Post saves the day!

My question to you is which is worst:
A-losing 50$ for a stupid fee
or
B-missing you flight and explaining to the airport security/police officers why you have a gun hidden in your stuff
