Usually for the serious air guns (Not the replicated BB blow backs), for the same gun setup, we can choose from .22 cal or .177.

I am new in air guns, and just realized the .22 will have harder hitting power, longer range, more accuracy... All better things in the major air gun performance remarks... Maybe only little higher price for pellets and less shots on the same co2 capsule (Not a problem anymore if you like to do the pumping exercise)...

SO, why ppl will buy .177 cal when there is a .22 to choose?

Some other advantage on the .177?

I'll start

Flatter trajectory.

FT Expert will tell you .177 is better for accuracy.

I like 22 cal for hunting. But target I like 177, cheaper and more options for pellets. Also more accurate.

How about if only talking about the pistols?!
But just do some search last night, actually we are going back to discuss the Crosman 2240 or 1377... there's very limited air pistol we can choose from .177 or .22 with a good balance between price and fun...

I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest that at the (likely) closer ranges you're thinking given we're talking pistols, that the .177 is not going to be any more accurate than .22. I really think that practically, that argument only has any noticeable impact at longer distances when trajectory factors in. My thoughts, and I could be wrong.

Just buy both and get it over with already.

You should heed ITGUY's advice.
Your question as to 'why' people 'buy' the .177 over the .22 will render a multitude of possible answers. It all comes down to 'what' do you intend to do with your airgun ?
Since you are new to airguns, as mentioned, you need to find your own preferences. So you can very affordably start with either or both and shoot them. You'll soon make up your mind and go on from there.
Good luck and happy shooting !

Many answers, different points of view, different opinions....However, facts are facts.
.177 cal is neither more accurate or less accurate than .22 cal
Some .177 cal pellets are cheaper than most .22 cal pellets (because they are smaller)
Most .22 cal pellets have a higher BC than most .177 pellets and therefore have straighter and flatter trajectory, when.... and this is the main point....the muzzle velocity is the same between calibers. For a non PAL rife and the vast majority of pistols this will be the case for a gun tuned to shoot at 499 fps, the .22 will be more stable and potentially more accurate than a .177. Them is facts, in my opinion.

But the .22 will make a big hole in the target whereas a .177 makes a smaller hole. If you want to see a cloverleaf group, use .177, if you want to see a great big hole use .22. If you want to be inconspicuous use .177, if you want to make some noise and hear a nice loud PLINK use .22. :drinkers:

When you go above non PAL muzzle velocity, which typically gives different velocity depending on cal, all bets are off and .177 may well outperform .22 cal.

umm~~ Really appreciated for such lots of useful advice from you guys!

Need to think about it and try it out~

I think next step will be a 2240 then, as I tried some .177 already and want to see the "bigger hole" and "louder sound" first...

Thanks again~

It's so interesting to re-read the posts long time ago... And it is glad to see actually you find the answers with helps and time and uncountable tries....

And everything is like a circle ~ I went for .22 and looks come back to 177 recently...

.22 definitely has greater power than 177. It give me too much fun on plinking ~ louder noise looks not true ( except you mean the noise while it hit the pop can ~ :)). Bigger holes are for sure especially recently I got some 22 wadcutters for the pop cans ~

And 177 will give you more accurate shots ( or I should say you can get accurate shots on the target easier than shooting 22, and this will be more obvious when you put the target with longer and longer distance to you... ) a flater pellet flying trajectory with 177 cal will be much more easier to control... Maybe I just need to shoot more and more to get the needed experience on 22 cals....

Cheers ~ Happy shooting ~

There isn't much options for 22 pistols. 1322/2240/ Few older crosman pistols. Or ones we cannot get really.

I guess speed sells. People see 495 and be like WOW. I personally like 177, pellets are cheaper, more common and well honestly I hoo hummed about 177 VS 22. But I went with 177. And don't regret it because I can sling 14.97 grn 177 at 885 FPS for 26 FPE. But I can shoot as low as 600 FPS. Speed/power option there if I need it. But I don't really hunt much. If I was would just use my 22 LR.

Reason you might think your 22 is louder, is because takes more air to push a 14.3grn pellets, than a 7.9 grn to the same speeds.

But in PB world. I shoot alot of 22 rimfire more than my bigger cals.

Yeah! If I need power, I found out while increasing the muzzle speed, the 177 cal can also have great power too!

For the noise, actually my 1322 is not loud when the pellet left the muzzle... The noise I pump it and the noise pellet hit the target will be louder... And I heard that the high speed 177 cal rifle over sound speed will cause louder noise as the pellet will break sound barrier then come back to under sonic speed...

If you like science try Hawke Chairgun for a factual source .
https://uk.hawkeoptics.com/chairgun.html
.22 beats .177 on every measurement @495 fps . If going pal and you keep the muzzle energy the same .22 also is superior in both retained energy and drop .

Chairgun is a very informative predictor .

Yes ~ I have Chairgun in my phone too ~
And I learned from it that 177 (8 grains )@ just 600 fps can have similar energy as 22 (14 g)@450.. So a PAL rated rifle @ 177 will be good enough to shoot far and accurate with enough power...

And I don't realize the fps deal a good part in muzzle energy that much before...
