I managed to get a perfect day for testing the P17 accuracy at longer distances. A mild rain just ended so I set up my bench in the dead calm conditions. The long grass was completely still and not a leaf was shimmering. I made the best of it and tested the Beeman P17 pistol from 10 yards to 50 yards with 10-shot groups. The groups looked consistent and surprisingly tight.

My P17 wears a Millet SP-1 red dot but I have been using this 3 MOA optical sight on air pistols for 14 years so it's quite comfortable. It might not be as precise as a high mag rifle scope but I enjoy the dot sight and it works well if you use an appropriate aiming spot.

Beeman P17 - purchased new in May 2010
8.44gr JSB Exact - Lot #6070016
Tested velocity - 394, 394, 391, 395, 394 - ave 394 fps

Accuracy with 10-shot groups (ctc)
10 yards - .49"
20 yards - .89"
30 yards - 1.31"
40 yards - 3.09"(10 shots) - 1.95"(9) --- 2.69"(10) - 2.08"(9)
40 yard - 2.86"(10 shots) - 1.52"(9) --- 2.92"(10) - 2.54"(9)
50 yards - 3.02" --- 3.89"(10 shots) - 3.04"(9)

Notes:
> Several of the 40 yard and one of the 50 yard groups had one flyer. I included the measurements for all 10 shots and also for the best 9 shots in each group.
> The 40 yard average without the flyers is a hair over 2" ctc.
> The 50 yard average without the one flyer is a hair over 3" ctc

Tested Trajectory
10 yards - 3/4" high
20 yards - 1/4" high
30 yards - 3" low
40 yards - 10" low
50 yards - 21.5" low

MORE proof of what a great deal this inexpensive pistol is for the price it sells at...

@TCooper

Always enjoy reading your stuff and I hope one day to have the capability of just saying "To Hell with everything" and spending the day outside plinking. I would like to say my cell will be the first target, but hopefully it will be at the bottom of Lake Simcoe by then....

Had no idea the P17 could shoot that far. Thought the pellet would hit the ground at 2/3 that distance. Only a 21" drop with such tight groups is incredible. A red dot on this pistol is how I prefer mine, although at that distance (think 50 yards is around 46 metres) I'd think the dot would hide the target. Would love to see someone try a similar test with a diopter mounted on the P17. Hmm, wonder if there has ever been a diopter mounted on one, now that's a mod I'd like to see. Would make a cheap Olympic target pistol.

Hi Joolz... My P17 is hitting POA at a little over 20 yards, as posted in the trajectory numbers above. With almost 400fps MV it still drops almost 2 feet from approx 21 yards to 50 yards. The day I was shooting was dead calm. The tall grass was not moving at all. I couldn't have asked for a better day for testing an air pistol. Any wind movement would have messed up the groups.

The Millet SP-1 red dot has a small 3 moa dot size. This gives me a 1.5" dot at 50 yards. My aiming point was a cut square of 2" red duct tape and it worked out fine. The red dot was much brighter than the tape and easily visible. A small bullseye allows adequate precision, considering there is no magnification.

I have never mounted a scope on the P17 but I had a 9X AO scope on my HW40. Many years ago I recorded average group size at 1/2" at 20 yards. Unfortunately I never tested it beyond that distance. Now I'm tempted to try a 9X scope on the P17 for 50 yards... if I can get another dead calm day.

As most say, this is the best bang for the buck. Only other gun that rivals this for value is (was?) the Daisy 953 but apparently now the price has skyrocketed. So yeah, the P17 remains king.

Just noticed in your pic that yours has a blade for the front sight. Wish that was the case with mine. It came from the US with fibre optic sights, which I absolutely hate (and the main reason why I have a red dot on mine). But I have to admit, even with these oversized green blobs I have managed to pile up pellets nicely, albeit at a much shorter distance. Would be interesting to see results with a scope if you ever get around to it. Must be tough seeing a 2" target at 46m but despite that you still managed to get some very respectable groups. Not sure if I should give you or the gun credit :!:

Do enjoy reading up on your reviews of cheapo guns. Kinda makes me think all those gun snobs that often look down at low priced guns cringe at your posts :-P

I bought my P17 over 7 years ago from KMart in the USA. My HW40 was purchased over 18 years ago. Thankfully they both have the black sights (no fibre optic). I'm not sure why anyone would put those things on an air pistol... or rifle

The trick to accurately using the red dot is getting a good one that will allow you to turn down the intensity to make a small round dot with no halo edges or comet tails. My SP-1 will do this. A 2" square red piece of duct tape on a bright white piece of paper will stand out nicely at 50 yards on a summer day (contrasting colours). There isn't much room for aiming error with the small bullseye.

The pistol gets most of the credit. I used a rabbit-ear sandbag rest to keep it in position while shooting. A thin pad was put under the pistol's butt to adjust elevation. I lightly hold the pistol, aim and squeeze off the shots during dead calm conditions. I have put over 30,000 pellets through my two pistols so I'm quite familiar with how they like to be held. They have a mild muzzle flip that you shouldn't try to control. Don't touch the top half of the pistol when shooting because it moves slightly during the shot (as pistol releases pressure).

Good shooting, for any pistol. I would hazzard an educated guess, that there are 0 powder burning CF pistols & darn few powder burning CF revolvers which will match this accuracy.

Fraid Hollywood disagrees with you. Recall the smiley face Mel Gibson drew with his semi-auto pistol in Lethal Weapon? Or all those lives saved by a single shot fired through the rope as the friend hangs by the neck at the gallows? Don't even mind all the cars exploding as the flick's hero fires a single shot onto the gas tank from a distance, as the car speeds away. Yep, powder burners sure look good in movies, if one can discount reality.

Have no doubt TCooper could replicate the smiley face at the same distance Mel "drew" his, with the P17. But airguns are still to make an impression in movies. Till then we can only watch and laugh at the action scenes - while knowing we can so much better.

As per Mel's words as he leaves the firing range: have a nice day!

Around 2000-2002 I had a TAU-7 pistol that would easily outshoot the P17 and HW40. I still have the old review that has 30 yard groups averaging 3/4" and 40 yards at 1". However, these were shot with the pistol clamped into a Black & Decker Workmate in dead calm conditions. I never did try that pistol at 50 yards but I'm guessing it would do 2" or less with the JSB Exact.

TAU-7 Pistol
5 shot groups @30 yards
8.44gr JSB Exact - .70, .90, .70, .40, .90 -- ave =0.72"
7.9gr Cros Premier- .95, 1.00, .80, .95, .90 -- ave = 0.92"

5 shot groups @40 yards
8.44gr JSB Exact - 1.05, .75, 1.05 -- ave = 0.95"
7.9gr Cros Premier - .95, 1.20, 1.15 -- ave =1.10"

Now I'm curious to compare the P17 to the HW40 with a 9X scope at 50 yards. I hope I can get some time on a calm day. It's useless to try with any sort of wind.

Here is that second P17 group from 50 yards. The low flyer opened it up to 3.89"ctc. The best 9 shots were 3.04"ctc. The best 7 shots clustered into a tiny group of approx. 1 1/2". I could probably shoot 50 yard groups all day (calm day) and more often than not have 1 or 2 flyers that would ruin an excellent cluster. The slow pellets can't overcome any sideways air current even if extremely mild.

Well I'll be Damned....I found one of these things in a box I was going through last evening. Didn't even know I had it. Gotta be 5 years old give or take, looks brand new. Probably tried it once and put it away then forgot about it.

If i get time in the next day or two we'll see if it shoots accurately, although not at 50 yards :)

In terms of controllable accuracy, the best I've shot is my Crosman 1701-P. It will outshoot the P-17 by a long shot....
The P-17 is a lot of fun for what it is~ a very serious plinker.

I have yet to find favorable wind conditions for shooting 50 yds with an airgun of any kind. In fact, in the shooting I do, I have no business trying to take game with an airgun at ranges over 25 yds. That is a self imposed limitation. The P-17's + 6 M.O.A. is asking for trouble when the k/z is a little over 3/4", but that's just me and my opinion...
