My 1740 project has worked out really well but the trigger is terrible. If I squash the spring that is inside the grip a bit, it can be made lighter but then it does not pierce the CO2 (as I recall when I first tried this about a year ago...).
As it is, I need to dry fire a couple of times to get the CO2 flowing - I think because the snipped hammer spring also influences this.
Is the custom adjustable trigger kit (around $65) worth it or will I just end up with CO2 issues?

I think the whole problem is your hammer spring. When I made my 1740 to shoot 180 rds from one C02. I had to fire it a few times for it to pierce. Nature of a clipped spring.

Installing the trigger kit shouldn't effect the piercing of the C02 at all, or the delivery. All it does is limit the effort it takes to pull the trigger for the sear to let go the hammer.

...or install a P-rod grip frame and trigger assembly, and be completely done with trigger issues, regardless of hammer spring tension. You will have to come up with a non-waisted hammer- but It's better than entirely worth the effort.

It's a Crosman part, the complete trigger assembly for the Marauder Pistol.... You will also need either the hammer to go with it, a hammer from a Challenger, or you will have to fill the "waist" in your 2240 hammer.... The hammer MUST be straight on the bottom, with no hollow frm the waist, or you cannot cock the gun without pulling the trigger....

I agree that your CO2 piercing problem is all hammer spring related, and NOT related to the trigger sear spring....

Just coming back to this, my hammer snipping adventures have given me about 55-60 good shots from one CO2. I have only had one opportunity to measure, seemed to be doing right around 500 fps.
Snip more? Start again with a new spring? Add some washers to put more tension on the current spring? Leave alone?
This is what I was getting - the black circles are half an inch so approximately:
20 yd : 1/2 in
30 yd : 3/4 in
40 yd : 1 1/2 in
Worth spending more on the trigger kit (or anything else for that matter) or will this be as good as it gets?
Also, anyone know why the groups start to fall away to the right? Is that me pulling them or something like scope alignment?
