Hey everyone!

I've been reading these forums for quite some time so I figured I should actually sign up.

Growing up, I would spend hours upon hours shooting until the sun went down (even rigged up lights sometimes when it did so I could keep going). I had participated in some competitions and was actually pretty decent for my age. After a few moves in and out of the country, I left it all behind. Fast forward 20 years and trip to a gun range for a bachelor party rekindled my interest in shooting. As I have a tendency of going full tilt on new hobbies, I figured this time I would try to take it slow and think it through BUT as of late, I've had some added motivation.

This motivation comes in the form of a rodent terrorizing our house. After spending way too much money on conventional traps, poison and glue traps, I've decided this will give me all the reasoning I need to buy an air gun. This mouse and I have had many standoffs only mere feet from one another yet I'm never fast enough to get him. I've watched him avoid my traps like the plague and even jump over the barriers I've created. And that brings me here.. Finally a reason to buy a gun! (My wife signed my permission slip today when the filthy creature ran out from under the couch where she was sitting) I look forward to also being able to teach my kids how to properly handle the guns and shoot as well.

Anyways, enough with the rambling! Looking forward to soaking in some more information and building my arsenal!

Hi Derik - welcome to the forum.

As to shooting the mouse in the house - I would not do that myself, due to damage to the floor, walls from ricochets, or to trappings, like lamps, tables ect.

As to traps, none beats the bucket of water (3"in the bottom)with wire across the top and a peanut buttered beer or pop can on the wire. Put a board up both sides to the mouse can easily climb up the board(slat), then reach out for the can- the can spins, and he drops into the water.

Just this summer, my mouse trap, made as noted above, caught/trapped and killed 61 mice in 6 nights. 16, then 6 then 5, then in a different camp, 13, 13, then 8 the last night.

The bucket I used, was a tapered rectangular plastic garbage bucket, 9" wide at the top and 12" long. I ran the wide across the top, narrow end to narrow end, and used a LARGE beer can, smeared with peanut butter. I got 16 the first night I set it up and after setting the trap, the mice stopped entering my trailer at night. The first 2 nights there, they voraciously chewed on the hard poison block in the trailer, awakening us over and over all night long - yet even though they almost ate an entire block of warfarin, I still got 16 the first night in the bucket trap. Actually ,any bucket will work. They do not last long in the water. You need enough to 'float' a few mice and deep enough they cannot jump out of the bucket.

Thanks all! I've tried the bucket trick as well. My house looked like a gauntlet for mice and they avoided everything. Well, everything except the pellet I put through him this morning.

I'll definitely toss one of those bucket traps in the backyard though to see if I can't thin the herd a little preventing more from entering the home as it starts to get colder.

I'm looking forward to spending some more time with this once I make myself a solid pellet trap for target practice.
