So, I am striking off at a slow pace as a new air rifle owner. I see everyone's posts here with all of the mods, cleaning, lubricating etc. I assume if I want to do anything in depth I will need a spring compressor. Are they available at internet stores? What should I expect to pay? Are they all alike? What else might be necessary? Thanks, Dave

Actually, with HW 98 or HW97, you do not need a spring compressor to dismantle and re-spring them. Watch a video - there are several showing the process of installing Vortec and other spring.seal kits.
Other springers require some form of spring compressor - I assume from what I've seen. Spring compressors can be made at home. Google can be your friend.

Something like this can be very versatile.

A problem that can be encountered with this type of tool is that sometimes the screw is not long enough to decompress the spring. Do a little search here on the forum for what others use. Often a screw-scissor car jack is ''adapted'' for spring work.

Other than that, some molybdenum disulphide grease (moly paste), SAE 30w non-detergent motor oil and some silicone oil/grease are useful. As for the common hand tools, I think you already got it covered

I change springs quite often. Even change full power springs. I just use my hands and get my wife to put the pin in. Sometimes a piece of 2x4 with barrel on the ground and push down on the end cap and wife puts the pin in. If you are not married already a spring compressor is much cheaper and you put the pin in.

I recently bought this one http://airgunsource.com/air-venturi-rai ... or/dp/2691 . It seems to work well. Only issue I had was it didn't center itself on the Weihrauch hw57 rear tube. I had to mount a scope rail adapter on the gun, raising the height, then mount this compressor onto the adapter. When tightening it it did mark the adapter slightly, but I may have been overly cautious in how much I tightened it. Other than that, worked great and it's small so storing it isn't an issue.
