Hello all!

Newbie here and my question is...

Does one need a PAL to own and operate a .22 calibre pellet gun? Is it regulated by the velocity? Am I to understand that as long as it shoots less than 500 FPS a PAL is not necessary? I currently have a Daisy Powerline 340 pistol for indoor target shooting fun but for small pest control I understand that a pellet gun will be more effective in terms of humanely dispatching small rodents like mice. Would anyone have suggestions for an inexpensive but useful pellet rifle? So far I have my eye on the Crosman 1322 and 1377 pistols which can be modded to have a shoulder stock and scope but of course all that costs money. ;)

Thanks!

No, Yes they are regulated by velocity. Only time you need a PAL if your buying/modding airguns over 500 FPS. Now if your going to modify a 1377/22 over 500 FPS than they become a restricted firearm. EVEN if you add a stock and longer barrel.

Rats and mice a 1377/1322 would do the trick. 177 is easier and cheaper to get pellets. Faster speeds, less energy. 22 is more energy slower speeds.

[emoji16] 1322 with a stock is not going to empty your pocket~ but if you want going further, every step needs money to support ~

Below 500fps don't need PAL.

But 13xx is a pistol. If you go too far to above 500fps. You are not going to need a PAL, but a R.PAL for it.

1377 would be too weak to use on pest control... for hunting needs, .22 is the smallest cal you should consider.

To add to that. Its not just oh I got a RPAL I can mod mine over 500 FPS. Then you need to register it AND only can be shot at approved ranges.

.177 is fine for mice and rats and chipmunks. Esp under 500 FPS.

Thanks for the excellent info!

Since I don't ever plan on owning or using a gun that shoots more than 500 fps I will now investigate .22 calibre pellet guns. I do like to shoot targets as well so I will keep my Daisy pistol for fun since it's pretty accurate, quiet and so far quite fun and reliable.

This is a great forum!

Look at the 760. Its cheaper than buying a 1377, then adding a longer barrel and stock. 760 Has longer barrel, your able to mount a scope or reddot on it without buying mounts that don't work or a steel breech. Easier to pump and some come with multi shot clip.

.177 500 FPS airguns probably shot more mice, rats and chipmunks than another other cal.

Yeah, sounds good ~ it's a truely good advice !

All my 177 pellet guns are replica pistols. Then I bought my 1322 and 2240, both .22 cal. And that's why I think 177 is not good / power enough for shooting rats etc because I like the extra power from a 22 better~

Well 177 is more than enough to shoot rats and mice, Even starlings. Ive taken a Crow and few piegons with it. Neighbor helps controls the rats/mice population because the horses next door with a 177.

Also with 177 there is more choices for pellets w/o paying a fortune for quality 22.

Princess auto has the 760 on clearance for 43$

Thanks for the reply! Yes in my introduction thread someone did recommend the 760 variable pump action .177 pellet rifle and for $43 it seems like a great deal. It looks like the 760 also comes as a kit with a scope or did I read that wrong? Also after looking at many many YouTube video reviews of various rifles I agree that .177 pellet ammo is cheaper and with many more options in terms of different types of pellets in that caliber. I also have learned that lighter pellets have a little more velocity that heavier pellets.

That being said I am not just looking at different guns for dispatching pests but also for general target shooting for fun as well as time goes on and I get more familiar with the hobby.

As for the 1377, I have looked at quite a few videos on it and I may still get it in the future since it's accuracy is so good for shooting targets from 10-15 meters. Besides with the shoulder stock added it would still be just over $100.

Depending on your budget, you might want to check out the forum store. I bought a sub-pal Diana 280 in. 22 and it's a great little gun.

Thanks for the suggestion! I haven't gotten around to looking at the store but will do so as soon as I have the money! :D

I just bought a 1322 and recommend it. You don’t need a PAL for it as it shoots 460 fps (on paper, anyway). It’s accurate, powerful, and infinitely upgradable. It delivers about 7.2 fpe versus about 3.5 fpe from the .177 version.

Thanks for the advice on 1322. It's certainly on my list of air pistols to consider purchasing. Everything I have seen on it has been very positive. I like how both it and the 1377 work.

I think to the new one in airguns, who will usually buy and play with replicas first, and then step into the shooters. Because I just passed the same route ~ [emoji16]

If you don't have unlimited budget, and will buy your toys one by one. 1322/2240 must be one in your collection but not in the first days ~

actually I thought the 1322 was way too ugly and don't understand why it got so many 'most favor gun of the year' rewards in a line of several years before I was a bit bored with BB gun and 177 pellets and want to step up to bigger cal and found it's cheap (I know why it's actually not cheap at all and why become the world's most expensive air gun...). [emoji29] right now it's my favor gun and I bring it with me in my car every day ...
