Hey guys, I'm thinking of getting my second pistol, and I'm debating between the 1377 and the HB17. It's a tough dilemma for me because it seems that the 1377 can produce higher velocities, yet the HB17 seems to have better quality in build. Which do you suggest I get? I plan to hunt rats, squirrels, and the stupid crows which peck on the lawn.

Oh yeah, does anybody know where I can get the silver (nickel) version of the HB17? Does Mr. Marvin sell them?

Thanks :D

With a couple quick easy mods a 1377 will be ok for rats and squirrels within 20 yards. But without insane mods a 1377 will never kill a crow.HB17 will be even worse for hunting.

If you get an HB pumper,
they are on the hard side to pump.
And the trigger are not the best out of the box.
But the are mostly made of brass and wood & will last you a long time.

My H9A .20 pumper is a TWO hands shooters and hard to pump.
I find it front heavy but not too heavy to shoot with 2 hands.
First pump 15 lbs on bathroom scale.
Second pump 25 lbs
3rd 28 lbs
4th 32 lbs
5 pump 35 lbs
6 pump 36 lbs
7 pump 37 lbs
8 pump 38 lbs

Consider the HB22 if you are going to get the Sheridan. The 22 is capable with mods of approaching the 495fps limit. With the 22, it's got a great deal more punch.
A 1322 would be very easy to get to the same output.

Always loved my 1377, one of the few Crosmans I have any affection for.

Disagree that the Crosman 1377 will not kill a crow.
Indeed Squirrels are tougher than Crows in my opinion, in the body.
A slightly moded Crosman will hit about 560 fps with .177 pointed of 8.4 grains and will circumvent the entire chest cavity from about 30ft if you can get close enough.
Squirrels are tough critters and really demand headshots for clean kills with .177 pistols of 500fps plus.

A friend of mone recently did a Squirrel which was face fronting, with his Crosman 1377 (slightly moded)
The pellet had passed down through the skull and stopped in the neck.
Keep ranges to 30ft though.

I think I've had at least 4 HB's and 2 1377's and currently I've only got a 1377. Although the HB's are much better built than the 1377s I like the 1377 more.

The HB's are harder to pump, the triggers are not very nice and the grip plates moved about on every one I had.

The 1377 are easier to pump, generate the same velocity with a few mods, have great grips and are alot cheaper price wise. Quality of construction is what you get from Crosman.

It is actually too easy to mod a 1377 above the velocity of any HB. The real problem is staying legal.
I believe most pointed hunting pellets will hit our 6ftlbs (England maximum legal power) at 568fps....a walk in the park for any Crosman moder!

Using a better seal between receiver and air tube, is very simple and will return more velocity, as will modification to the bolt probe.
Keeping the thing legal, is an altogether different ball of wax.
The accuracy of the 10 inch Crosman barrel is way better than the HB barrel.
We have proved this at my club but cannot tell if this is from barrel quality or length.
Crosman did massively improve the quality of the their barrels about 8 years back, while phosphor bronze HB barrels have never been quite elite....so suspect its this but not sure, length often plays a part.

Hey guys, thanks for all the help :) With your help I decided to buy the 1377 from D&L. But guess what, when I contacted them, they said they are out them and ordering them in 4-5 weeks  But yea, I think I probably will go for the HB a little later, but I'll try the Crosman first.

Does RWS Superpoint work well with the 1377? Which is best?

Derek, could you help me out. I have an HB22 that ended up in the closet out of frutration as I can only get about 380fps out of it. Would like to see if i can figure out where I went wrong.
Thanks
Walter...

Lgx,
Indeed, pointed pellets work best in the .177 1377
We experimented this quite conclusiely about 4 years ago.
Usually, heavier pointeds are more efficient in pneumatic systems due to their extra weight. They may also be slightly more robust when being probe pushed.
