I put this forward...If I measure out a specific target distance and then focus to a sharp image and I have a mark on the tube and focus ring on my scope, is this not a poor mans rough range finder? If I do my cyferin (writting) and do different measured targets without changing the magnification I can get a range of distances using my focus ring. mark is 50 yd. 1/8" from mark is approx 40 yds etc .If you kept a chart and zeroed your sights a 50 yds you could use this to give a rough number of clicks . It would be similar to the lense on an SLR except the scope has a fixed aperature. Is this legal for hunter Keyrigger? I have seen in some photos guys having a piece of paper with writing on it taped to their scopes.

In a word; No. Not in HFT.
Cut and Paste from the rules:
Quote:
Hunter Division

C) Optical sights may not be set higher than 15 times magnification. Clicks may be used on the turrets and focusing is allowed to obtain a sharp image. All distance markings must be covered. Any reticule is allowed.

Your description is exactly how it's done.

Depends. If you're doing it with a $2000 dollar scope, is it still "poor man's"?

vAgRaNt is correct with this info.

The procedure you mentioned for getting the clicks for each distance still should be done. You will then cover your distance markings on the scope and estimate the distance. You then click your scope to the appropriate setting for that distance. Practicing ranging by eye can improve this skill fairly quickly. Just make sure you practice in open areas and bushy areas, as the distances to seem different in the varied environments you will be shooting in.

The other part about the high end scopes is also true. At short distances, I will often set my scope for shooting 11.5 yards or 12.3 yards, as there are so many clicks between each yard between 10-13 yards. I just take the total clicks fro 11 to 12 yards and may click one half or a third or whatever I feel will put it dead on. I know I am not the only one who does this.

I have taken the intermediate clicks a step further. I have sub-divided the tape on my wheel to have the number of clicks between the yards shown. When my indicator stops for focus, I set the turret to the click it is set to. It is kind of bringing the marks on the focus wheel to a new level for setting the turret.

That's a real good idea Key.

I do as Mac does, and just do the math in my head as to what percentage of the distance between the two yardages is used, and click using the same rough ratio.

But since there is so many clicks between each even yard on the shortest distances, your method is super.
