I'm moving to Canada in August and I've realized that it's probably better to sell my collection here in South Africa, and to build it up again in Canada. I'm not too worried about the cheapies, since I know I can easily replace them. I would like to replace my top end guns though. Can you guys please suggest places to start looking for the following rifles when I get to Canada.

Air Arms S510SL
Daystate Huntsman
Steyr LG110
Weihrauch HW97KL
Weihrauch HW98

BTW, I'll be settling somewhere near Toronto.

Thanks in advance.

My collection can be seen at:

I know the air arms s410 you can get through airgunsource,

the daystate, I am pretty sure scopesandammo is in the process of starting to deal with them,

and D+L had Weihrauch guns, not sure if it has both of the ones you want though.

airgunsource.com will be able to order you a S510, they do not stock them though........probably 2-3month wait

specialtyshootingsports.com is in the process of getting Daystate and Theoben guns, I would contact them regarding the warranties they will offer on the guns though.........

specialtyshootingsports.com and dlairgun.com both carry a good selection Weihrauch guns.........

Nope, I pulled away and went with another venture when it became obvious the new owners at Daystate (Italian company) were just trying to (more appropriate descriptive term censored to be polite) "push" product. People made it very clear, understandably, that for the money spent on the Daystate, a premium level of service would be required- I didn't really get the idea the Italian gentleman really did care about this, despite alot of talk. He apparently finds their dealers so valuable that when I was sent a notice from him last week that they had reached a deal with "Sports Shooting", and if I wanted to sell a few units I could think about dealing with them- I could only shake my head and had to write the gentleman back to let him know that "Specialty Shooting Sports Outdoors" is not "Sports Shooting". Good luck to SSSO- I think they may need it unless they are able to deal directly with the UK people, not the Italians.

Back to the topic:

My suggestion to Old Van is to leave his guns with a friend, come to Canada and get a PAL, then have them shipped or on a visit back to SA pick them up- to sell and then try to replace his collection here will result in a loss of thousands of dollars at today's prices.

Once here he could have them shipped to a licensed gun dealer and they could be held until he gets them all tidied up with the paperwork...

for a gold pennie.. But better than the rather well sized diamond you'd spend replacing them all.

I did the math on that exercise, and actually, it will be cheaper in the end to build up the collection again. Airguns are prohibitively expensive in South Africa. Then I have to get my PAL, get import permits for the rifles and pay courier fees. So in the end it is less of a chore to rather sell them and buy again in Canada. How about buying in the USA? Is it feasible?

BTW, my plans have changed. I'm starting a new job in Vancouver on the 1st of June.

Congratulations. 8) You'll find the weather, especially the winters much milder here than back East. You can pretty much Golf and Shoot outside year round, here in the Lower MainLand. Any questions about Vancouver or assistance needed prior or after you arrive, please feel free to give me a hollar.

Great, thanks scruffie. I'm looking at the Maple Ridge or Langley area. It get's a bit cheaper as one goes up the valley it seems. I'll have a lot of airgun questions, I'm sure. Where do the guys shoot FT and what can be hunted and which pests can be controlled with airguns? See there's 3 questions right there already!

If you have a choice, one thing a person may like to consider when deciding which side of the Fraser river to live on is the amount of rain fall the area receives. North side(North Van, Seymour, mapleridge, mission, pittmeadows, etc) is up against the Mountains and receives quite a bit more wet stuff, than areas south of the Fraser Like Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford, etc. Generally the more south of the Fraser you go towards the border , the less rain you get. All High #'s are north of the fraser.

There is a brand spanking new bridge (right in front of my shop)that connects maple ridge to Surrey Langley. Not shown on google earth for some reason?

The first thing you will need to do is get your Licence to possess firearms. PAL
http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/fs-f ... er-eng.htm
Very easy weekend course. At the same time you can write the CORE course.
again very basic and the firearm handling section will be waived as you have just taken the pal. Again a very basic course. As I said it can all be done on a weekend or at night classes over a week period. After a wait for the paperwork to clear, You will now be good to buy a firearm and go hunting for any of the available species in the province. Every thing from Grizzly & black bear, Mountain lion, wolf, to Moose, Elk, 3 species of Deer, Blacktail, Mules and whitetail etc.
Page 10 of the Huntings regs linked below.

As you probably know already anything under 500fps can be purchased overr the counter with no licence needed. Lots of Invasive species to our province that can be killed at any time of year with no licence required. Scedule C in the hunting regs

Thanks for the info Scruffie. I can't wait to get there. Controlling invasive species is one of my main airgun activities, and then FT!

Probably the easiest option for you is to just resister them yourself when you get here, I have a friend in the US that travels up here for FT matches, it's $20 per rifle and allows you to legally bring it into the country while you 'visit'. I put visit in quotes, as I think this process assumes you're visiting (but I'm not sure it does, and perhaps you are visiting, then once you're here you decide to immigrate here and stay)

The other option is to find someone locally with a PAL that is willing to have the air rifles transfered into their name until you receive your PAL. Getting your PAL shouldn't take long at all, like a month or so.

There is not 'import permits' required, all the person has to do is phone up the Firearms centre and tell them they're importing the air rifles, give them the make, model and s/n. That's it. Then you bring them over and give them to him, once you get your PAL, he gives them back to you and transfers them into your name.

Technically, I think they'll have to pay the provincial and federal taxes on their value (13%) but they don't have to be valued high, and every time my friend from the US brought rifles to me that were registered in my name, they didn't ask him (or me) to pay taxes.

This is the same process for buying air rifles from the USA (which I've done several times).

If you were still moving to Toronto, I'd let you put them all in my name temporarily.

All in all, it's not that complicated to do, I wouldn't want you to sell all your air rifles, you may find it tough to replace them. You can get replacements out of the US, but finding a seller willing to ship to Canada can be a pain in the arse.
