My suggestion to Old Van is to leave his guns with a friend, come to Canada and get a PAL, then have them shipped or on a visit back to SA pick them up- to sell and then try to replace his collection here will result in a loss of thousands of dollars at today's prices.
I did the math on that exercise, and actually, it will be cheaper in the end to build up the collection again. Airguns are prohibitively expensive in South Africa. Then I have to get my PAL, get import permits for the rifles and pay courier fees. So in the end it is less of a chore to rather sell them and buy again in Canada. How about buying in the USA? Is it feasible?
BTW, my plans have changed. I'm starting a new job in Vancouver on the 1st of June.
Probably the easiest option for you is to just resister them yourself when you get here, I have a friend in the US that travels up here for FT matches, it's $20 per rifle and allows you to legally bring it into the country while you 'visit'. I put visit in quotes, as I think this process assumes you're visiting (but I'm not sure it does, and perhaps you are visiting, then once you're here you decide to immigrate here and stay)
The other option is to find someone locally with a PAL that is willing to have the air rifles transfered into their name until you receive your PAL. Getting your PAL shouldn't take long at all, like a month or so.
There is not 'import permits' required, all the person has to do is phone up the Firearms centre and tell them they're importing the air rifles, give them the make, model and s/n. That's it. Then you bring them over and give them to him, once you get your PAL, he gives them back to you and transfers them into your name.
Technically, I think they'll have to pay the provincial and federal taxes on their value (13%) but they don't have to be valued high, and every time my friend from the US brought rifles to me that were registered in my name, they didn't ask him (or me) to pay taxes.
This is the same process for buying air rifles from the USA (which I've done several times).
If you were still moving to Toronto, I'd let you put them all in my name temporarily.
All in all, it's not that complicated to do, I wouldn't want you to sell all your air rifles, you may find it tough to replace them. You can get replacements out of the US, but finding a seller willing to ship to Canada can be a pain in the arse.
