Dennis E and I were out at the Port FT range and did a little trimming. We ran a line from the shooting box, as straight as possible, to the stake at the end of every lane (20 lanes). At the same time, I was locating the stakes at the end of the lanes to run almost parallel to lane one, but at the same time create a bit of flare to separate the lanes. The flare is only about 8 - 10 degrees, but it helped, especially when we were placing the stakes for lanes 14 through 19. Lane 20 is a good distance from lane 19, so it was not an issue there.

Once that was done, I took the chainsaw to cut larger brush and saplings, while Dennis grabbed the gas trimmer and eliminated all the weeds and undergrowth from the lane. The line down the center of the lane helped us to focus our cutting and trimming to about two or three feet on each side of the line to create a lane about five or six feet wide. With lanes cut this way, we still keep the forest feel to the course and for the most part, we will only see the targets in the lane we are shooting in, which was one of my goals.

I have the numbers for the lanes ordered and early this week, will fasten all the numbers and finish up the trimming. The CFO will then be contacted to come in and plot the whole course with his GPS and compass. If that goes well, then we hope to get the three day permit for full power for the CAFTA Nationals and then await the final approval of the range that will allow us to shoot full power at all the rifle matches.

The light at the end of the tunnel is definitely getting bigger and brighter. I'll keep you up to date on any significant developments.

Len and I went out this afternoon to finish clearing the lanes of brush too large to cut with a gas powered trimmer. I used the chainsaw and Len placed the cuttings between the lanes and lopped some overhanging branches and brush with a manual lopper. The two of us breezed through the remaining lanes in maybe an hour and a half and then put the numbers from 1 - 20 on the lanes. Once we get the wood chips down on the path on new section of the course, it will be really nice.

The CFO will have a good sight-line from the shooting boxes to the ends of the lanes, so his GPS plotting of the course should be straight forward.

Now the the PC&DCC has finished with the 444 Walleye tournament, the treasurer has promised to get after the task of getting the chips delivered. Once the chips arrive, there will be one more workday before the CAFTA nationals and that should make the course ready for action.

Lobbing the pellets in with non-pal guns was a challenge but it'll be nice to get back to full power! Will the CFO give approval before the wood chips are in? That way we can get a little shooting in after the work day...?

Dave, the CFO, said as long as we have the lanes clearly marked and work has begun on the rest of the course, it can be inspected and approved. The problem will be when he actually gives permission for the range. For the Nationals, I am quite sure we are going to get a three day temporary permit to hold the event, but will have to wait until everything goes through on the CFO's end and the new shooting class of Air Gun Field Target has actually been officially approved and added to the Firearms Guidelines. When that is done, then we will be able to shoot there on the approved ranges on any day.
