2240 accuracy problem....

yea, i can hit the broad side of a barn with it!!!

brand new 2240 with new 10.1"(crown looked good) barrel in .22. and i am lucky if i can keep a 1" group at 12-15 feet from a rested position with new UTG (leapers) 4-16x 40 scope.

ugg, is it the gun or scope? the scope will go on my quest tonight and check if it is the scope because i can shoot better than that with my 500 quest ( a springer).

if it is the gun...would a simple barrel change fix the problem? because i still have the stock barrel.

thanks for your input

just checked the scope.
about ten clicks one way and 15 the other.
scope worked fine on my quest 500 long piston.

so i am going to change the barrel on the 2240 ( if i can find it)

ps- wife said:
"well, maybe you just can't shoot!!!"

just swapped out and put the stock barrel on it.
it in now shooting sub 1/2 goups (with a almost nonexistent crown)
i'm much happier now. to bad the 10" barrel doesn't show to be any good for accuracy.

 must go straighten that wife out of mine!

Don't beat the wife! LOL!
Usually it is when you reattach the new barrel you don't align everything perfectly straight! Check your two set screws on the barrel band are where they should be on the detents on the barrel and main tube! If you have access to a bore slighter use it! You may see how far you are actually off!

Get the barrel recrowned! You can do it at home lots of pointers on this forum and elsewhere!

My 10" barrel did the same thing. Turned out the transfer port was tearing the pellet skirt. Try pushing a pellet through with a cleaning rod and examine it. Could also be the leadle. I used a dremmel with a round burr to fix it. On slow speed very gently. Barrel metal is relatively soft.

thanks for the input guys.
i was really hoping for one ragged hole at 15 feet. not a 1/2 group with the odd flyer.
i'll have to have a look and do some polishing.
i hope that helps some.

this is kinda my last kick at the can as far as airguns go. if i can't get this one to shoot good groups, i'm ready to hang up the pellet guns and try something else.
i don't have a 1000$ to spend on a nice gun, but i was hoping i could get a modded 2240 to do the trick.

thanks again for you help!!!

You'll get there with the 2240, even if you have to try a barrel or two. At least barrels are cheap (although I'd like to try an LW, which isn't).

I have a crosman 10" 177 on mine and it does reasonably well with JSB exact RS, take a look at

topic53621.html

I'm guessing that Joe and Walter can do much better :)

Try running a tight patch down your 10" barrel to see if you can feel a rough spot in the barrel. A gunsmith will usually start with this method on powder burners.

I noticed no one mentioned pellet,s. What pellet,s are you using ? Most guns are pellet sensitive. While your Quest might shoot the pellet,s you're using with great accuracy, the same pellet in your 2240 might not do as well.

ah yes the pellet question
quest was running crosman pointed in 177
2240 was running crosman premier hollow point in .22 (the only .22 i can find in the local area)

My 2240 doesn.t like Crosman pellets either. Try a tight hold bench rested. or try JSB exact Rs pellets. Not the cometa pellets.
Do yourself a favor and bite the bullet "excuse the pun" and order some JSB pellet,s and find out what your guns are really capable of.the difference is remarkable.
