 Post subject: Removing chrome plating?

I'd like to remove the gold chrome finish from a Hatsan 135's trigger, so that I can blue it. Is there a best/easiest way to do this job?

Oven cleaner......Easy Off.......spray it and put it in a bag.

really isn't it going to eat away at the bag ?
and make sure your in a well vented area, like outside would be good and use rubber gloves that stuff is toxic. :shock:
I know its just a trigger but some might try this on bigger stuff not really a good idea just saying. :wink:

The plastic bag wont react with the Easy Off.......and it keeps the fluid wet so it works longer........once your done you just drop the part into soapy water and rinse.

Oven cleaner is for removing anodizing from aluminum parts, it can't remove real chrome plating.

There are varying types of chroming.....no it wont take chrome off a truck bumper or an oven rack :D But a gold anodized trigger or plastic plated parts and other applications where it is only for appearance, yes it will. I have used it to strip chrome plating off car trim and various motorcycle parts. Im not a big fan of chrome :mrgreen:

Huh, interesting, I'll have to keep it in mind when I need to remove chrome from plastic.

Sad story.....a lady that works with my wife told her that her husband tried to clean an oil film off his Harley with oven cleaner. Needless to say he was sick to his stomache once he hosed off his bike and found most of the chrome plating came off. Cost him a lot of money to get it back to original. Lessons learned.......as my wife started telling me the story I knew the sad ending

:lol: :lol: sick to his stomach from the chrome coming off or from the oven cleaner :lol: :lol: i take it, it was the chrome. :( :lol: I'm a little shocked that you don't like chrome Jonathan and you ride.

Last winter I started painting my bike satin black. I was going to black out the chrome too, but I saw a bike that was all black and didn't like it. The chrome made for a nice contrast. So it's not all bad lol

Well, the oven-cleaner method didn't work for removing the chrome plating on a Hatsan 135's trigger. It must be real-chrome, I guess. Any other suggestions or do I have to just resort to sanding it off?

You can use Lye or Caustic soda for the heavy stuff. But you have to know what you are doing. And also Muriatic acid......but wearing rubber gloves and a rubber smock and a face mask is needed for this. Your better off going to a shop with the part and telling them what you want. You may be lucky and find someone to sand blast it.......

Mayfair plating can un-plate too. They are on Carlaw in TO

There is a company called Caswell supply canada.

They offer plating and polishing supplies for classic cars and hobbyist types. They are in Port Perry.
