I see Air gun source sells 5 field targets, 3 Air arms, 1 gamo, 1 crosman. Does anyone have experience with these? I wanted to pick one or two up for practice.

Gamo is your best bet. They function very well, going down with a very light paddle hit and stay up with a 20 ft/lb face hit. Only thing I do is bend the paddle back so that it is parallel to the back of the target face. Bend just the round yellow paddle part back. This makes the hits at 90 degrees, which imparts the most energy into the paddle as opposed to deflecting the pellet slightly downward (less energy to the paddle) as they come out of the box.

No, not that one. Knock down field target squirrels, like the ones used in FT matches.

Get a few of Joel's reducers and you have targets for any range from 9 yards to 55 yards plus.

As a rule of thumb, for the distances you mention it's 15, 25 and 40mm.

In Canada, we shoot as follows:

Hit Zone Size in inches......Maximum Suggested Distance

0.25".....................15
0.375"...................20
0.5".......................25
0.75".....................35
1"..........................45
1.25".....................50
1.5".......................55
1.75".....................55

These are for open (sitting) shots

The following is for standing and kneeling shots that are more closely controlled:

Hit Zone Size.....Kneeling maximum distances.....Standing maximum distances

Keep in mind that these numbers are in the match guidelines, not in the rules. We are taking steps to change that and also try to line up the best we can with the WFTF rules, perhaps including the transition to metric units since we do live in a country that supposedly uses the metric system. We do have an open class that demands some higher difficulty and that is why our minimum zones are much smaller than the WFTF 15 mm minimum.

This does not prevent a match director from setting out a course that strictly follows the WFTF rules for the hit zone/ distance factor. That match would fall well within our guidelines.

Having a couple of different lanes with tiny KZs for the Open shooters would let you use only legal wftf sizes for those shooting wftf.

A match director could certainly do that and be within the rules. I kind of like those little zones to keep you on your toes and make sure you have done your prep work for the close distances.

I have been setting up lanes at FT matches for 15 years and although a couple of extra lanes does not seem like much for a match, when you multiply is many, many times, it could become the "straw".

Having tried a bunch of targets now, I wouldn't buy anymore of the AA ones for match use. They're fine for practice but have been responsible for a disproportionate share of malfunctions during competitions.

I tried it out with my 12 ft-lb gun at 20 yards as it came from the box. The spring catch that holds the paddle is pretty tight. The first shot to the middle of the paddle moved it back a little. The second shot to the same spot knocked the target down. After resetting with the stretchy string the target consistently went down with kz hits and didn't fall with faceplate hits. Edge hits didn't trigger the paddle but did move the paddle back a little. (It's actually satisfying to split pellets when you're doing it on purpose!) After splitting a pellet the target would fall with a faceplate hit as the paddle would already be partially disengaged.

As it comes from the box this target would be fine for practice but as is it isn't ready for competition use.
