Our first shoot of 2014 will be Sunday, May 25th, rain or shine.

If you haven't been out to a shoot yet and don't have a rifle, come out anyway and borrow a gun. For those of you with a foster fitting on your PCP gun, I'll have my HPA tank with a Foster and Hammerli fittings there for refills. To help with the expenses, we're going to start charging a $10 match fee - first time shooters shoot for free in their first match.

We will start setting up at 8:30, do some sighting in and try to start the match by 10:00. Please read the safety rules at the bottom of this email.

If the field is dry enough, we will have have 10 lanes with a total of 60 shots and we will toss in a standing and a kneeling lane for the main match. If you're bringing targets, please have them freshly painted with KZ that are a contrasting colour.

In addition to your gun and pellets please bring along a pen, clipboard , stopwatch and something to sit on (cushion or pad, not a chair) for the many seated shots. If you want to do sighting in please bring along a carton with targets attached. If you cut a couple of holes in the carton on one side near the bottom, you can run a string through the holes and then pull the target closer to you to check your elevation settings without needing a cease fire for everyone.

There will be a couple of airguns that people can borrow, and several fancy FT rifles for people to check out.

If you are bringing a PAL gun with you, remember your firearms licence.

The location is about six minutes south east of the Limoges exit on the 417 or south west of the Casselman exit. This is at the large acreage (open farm land with lots of wind to keep bugs away) of one the local airgun shooters. Email me for a map link.

GENERAL GUN HANDLING SAFETY
- NEVER point your gun at anyone and ALWAYS treat your gun as being loaded at ALL times.
- ALWAYS be aware of where your muzzle is pointing, if you have difficulty getting up from a prone shot without waving your gun around, please ask another member of your group to help you.
- If you have a magazine fed rifle, please remove the magazine between shooting pegs/lanes.
- If you have a Break Barrel rifle, please break the barrel to show it’s safe. Similarly if you have an underlever rifle, please crack the underlever while carrying the gun.
- Please do NOT rest your muzzle on your foot and please don’t carry your gun using the scope as a carry handle.
- Do not load your rifle or even look through the scope ANYWHERE except across a designated firing line – that means the Zero Range OR the Course and nowhere else.
- Most importantly, if you see someone being unsafe, politely point it out to them. THOSE WHO CANNOT SAFELY HANDLE FIREARMS WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE.
- While you’re shooting the course, we operate a BUDDY MARSHALLING system. That means that everyone on the course is a safety marshal, not just the people wandering around with florescent jackets on.
- it’s YOUR responsibility to make sure that everyone in your group stays safe.
- If you’re in ANY doubt at all, please ask one of the roving Marshals.
STOPPAGES
- If you hear a SINGLE blast on a whistle or air horn it means CEASE FIRE immediately. If you have a loaded gun, please point it at soft ground across the firing line and discharge it safely into the ground.
- Remember, We’re ALL responsible for safety, so please make sure that everyone in your group is aware of a cease fire and that the groups to your left and right are also aware.
- While a cease fire is on, please DO NOT look through your scope or shoulder your rifle for ANY reason.
- Two blasts of a whistle or horn mean that it’s safe to continue – Again, make sure everyone in your group and in the groups around you are aware of this.
- DO NOT Under any circumstances cross a firing line – if there is a problem, find a roving marshal and tell them what the problem is, they’ll be happy to help you.
- If you’re a spectator, please have consideration for those shooting the competition, and please do not approach or distract shooters while they’re taking a shot.

What a way to start the 2014 season, sunny, warm weather and very light wind that picked up towards midday, keeping the mosquitoes at bay! The conditions made for a perfect day of shooting. As the bugs back by the woodlot are still thick enough to carry away the smaller shooters, we opted to do this one in the open where the breeze would be our friend for a change. It was great to see lots of new people showing up to give FT a try for the first time. We had a total of 14 shooters, with a bunch of the regulars sending their regrets and saying they would be back next time. Hopefully we'll have ten full lanes next time.

We went with three targets per lane but decided to go with a more WFTF style of shooting. Everybody shot each target once in a lane before moving on to the next lane. After the first ten lanes everybody repeated the same lanes. As shooting targets twice in a row gives shooters an opportunity to adjust after their first shot based on spotting their impact (or pellet path), it's potentially easier to hit with the second shot. As the wind picked up and starting varying in direction by the time we were half way through shooting, there was no advantage to having shot the same target a couple of hours earlier. All but one of the targets had WFTF legal 15, 25 or 40mm KZ's. We put in a 3/8" reducer to give folks a taste of the Nationals. The Troyer difficulty factor for the match was about 26.8 but it felt harder because of shooting each target once at a time. The changing wind really was tricky for the longer shots in the second half - I dropped just 2 points in the first 30 shots and then 7 in the last 30. Those who were clicking in this format had double the chances of making an error (and at least one took advantage of the extra opportunity).

The shooting order we tried is good for increasing the challenge but it does add almost an hour to the running time with double the preparation minutes and transitions between lanes. Next time we'll use the shooting sequence that will be used for the Nationals, so it will be a bit easier.

The first season we tried to have a handgun side event after the rifle match but there were only 2-3 people who brought out air pistols. Given that targets are placed out to 50m, only about half of them would be close enough for a pistol to stand a chance of hitting them. What we found was that most people want to head home after the rifle match, but if the targets are being used for a separate handgun match we cannot start packing up until the couple of pistol shooters are finished. We haven't had anyone bring out a pistol for the past year.

You'd be welcome to come out and give it a try for fun with your handgun during the rifle match, just don't expect to hit the targets past 30m.
