I've been doing some thinking on a new air gun ... 9mm or larger.
Not sure if I want to go bigger then 9mm or not. I guess what I'm asking now is for any recommendations to brands.
I did shoot one at Brian's, can't remember whos gun ... maybe Daryl with a Samyang? All I remember is thinking I gotta get one of these!
Well, the time may be closer then I thought!
Not looking to spend a ton on one so what do I look at?
Suggestions will be appreciated.

Depends entirely on what your target will be, IMO.... In the modern PCP, I consider .224 through 7mm Varmint and Predator rifles.... .357 and up Deer rifles, and the .308 a crossover that can be used for either, depending on bullet weight and FPE level.... but IMO really not the best choice for either category....

In reality, most, if not all my shooting will be at paper targets, although a deer hunting trip would be appealing. So I guess this means I am looking at 9mm.
This brings up another question ... since I already have a 9mm mold that I have used for my 9mm pistol, could I still use that mold for a 9mm pellet?
Is there a preferred 9mm rifle? Since price is going to play a part in my decision, would a Samyang be where I should start? Do they come up for sale on occasion?

I think you want a RAW in 9mm

Haha, that might break the bank.......
Sam Yang would be a great one. Your bullet mold with pure lead might work well if around 110 grains.
I doubt you can hunt any big game with an airgun in Canada. Wild boar would be perfect for that caliber. Next shoot will bring mine and you can give it a try.

The hunting rules generally depend on the specific province you're in.

Though I don't hunt, in Quebec you can hunt small game (no deer, bear, moose or turkeys) with an air rifle of AT LEAST 500 fps, with the proper licenses: http://www.mffp.gouv.qc.ca/english/publ ... s/arms.asp

I believe there are similar regulations in other provinces too, but I don't know which.

Ontario.
Both over and under 500fps rifles can be used and under 500fps pistols.

The discussion was regarding big game (deer) though. :wink:

No BigGame hunting with a pellet gun of any caliber in Ontario.

Been thinking about this one lately also. I couldn't find anything in the regs regarding big game . Only reference I could find made mention of rim fire being illegal for deer. Anyone have an actual reference ?

Unless it mentions their use it would be wise to NOT use them
Airguns fall short on so many levels it is foolish to think they are a BIG GAME weapon
No one would consider a 9mm handgun a hunting caliber and at best airguns
will only hit that power.

Pg. 24 lists the only acceptable means by which big game can be harvested.

Firearms
Big game, including moose, may only be hunted with a
firearm (this includes bows). When hunting moose, you
may only use or carry a firearm of the type (rifle, shotgun,
bow or muzzle-loading gun) permitted for hunting moose
at that time in that Wildlife Management Unit (WMU). For
example, when hunting moose during a bows-only season,
you may use or carry only bow hunting equipment; you may
not carry a rifle or shotgun for hunting other species.
Specifications on the firearms, bows, bolts and arrows
that are permitted when hunting moose are found on
page 24.



Centerfire rifles, Shotgun, Muzzleloader and bows are the only acceptable firearms for big game.

I cannot remember or think of any section in the BC regulations that would specifically allow air rifles for big game. There may be, but will require more study and thought for the twisting of 'their' words. I wondered about this when Gordo and I went after a spring bear with his .45 SamYang. I was there with my 12 bore rifle, using 492gr. bullets at 1,750fps, just in case. He had about 200FPE while I had some 3,346FPE for back-up. The only suitable (close enough, "clear" target happened to be an older bear, all scarred up in the face with a good 10" between his eyes and end of his nose. He was a big-un - too durn big!

Use a PB for big game.
