The day was beautiful so I packed up my gear to do a bit more long distance shooting with the .177cal Optimus. A short spring spacer was used to set this rifle to 750fps with the 8.44gr JSB Exact.

There was definitely a mild intermittent breeze that was somewhat annoying. The leaves would flicker and the grass would gently sway... so I tried to wait for calm periods to shoot. A few times I got caught at 75 yards and had mild flyers in the groups.

First I tried some 50 yard groups.
8.44gr JSB Exact - 1.56, 1.07, 1.34, 1.17, 1.69 -- Ave = 1.37" ctc

Then I moved the target out to 75 yards.
8.44gr JSB Exact - 2.41, 3.50, 3.42, 3.53, 2.43, 3.72 --- Ave = 3.17" ctc

The 3.42" group was my first and it had a flyer to the left. The rifle was shooting to the right so I adjusted the scope after this group. The 3.53" group had an obvious low flyer. The 3.50" group had an obvious high flyer that went into the sighting box. The 3.72" group had a flyer to the left. The 2.41" and 2.43" groups were shot during dead calm conditions. I'm guessing that the rifle should consistently hold 2.5" to 3" groups at 75 yards during dead calm conditions.

I marked the 75yd target hits with a red marker to make them more visible. I also circled the target in the other picture.

Two lathes and too many projects

I almost don't want to post my result from today. They are hard to believe!

I measured off 75 yards again and enjoyed a couple of hours of dead calm conditions. I took my time and ensured that I didn't try to push the crosshairs to the target center. Instead I carefully positioned the rests to give a proper aim without putting any excess pressure on the grip.

75-Yards --- 5-shot groups --- 8.44gr JSB Exact
1.82, 2.33, 2.19, 2.31, 2.25, 2.10, 2.49, 2.20, 2.29, 2.50 --- Ave 2.25" ctc

I had two other groups that I excluded. A 2.83 and a 1.26. They were the highest and lowest and seemed to be extremes. Including these groups would actually reduce the average.

All these groups were shot with 8.44gr JSB Exact Lot #16070016. This is an excellent lot number and gives a push fit into the barrel. The pellet drops about halfway (or less) into the barrel and requires a push to make it flush. Unfortunately I finished off this tin today and opened another with a different lot number. This new lot was noticeably smaller in head size and dropped almost flush when inserting the pellet. Accuracy was obviously not nearly as good. Once I got home I checked my supply and found two more tins of "the good stuff". I sure wish we could reorder by lot numbers and get 10 to 20 tins of the same.

That's some awesome shooting out to 75 Yards with an under $200.00 spring rifle.

Ive always found your theads very interesting. I too have an Optimus that i would love to spend more time with. I also have an Airhawk 177 worth the about the same $ and found it more accurate than the Crosman.
I would love to see a comparison of the Optimus 1000 and the Airhawk 1000 at longer ranges.

So tell me about the muzzle brake on your Optimus. Where to find one?

I got it from Gravel for about $5.00. It's just a plastic sleeve that comes with the Fury model. It has a slight taper inside so it goes on tight and doesn't seem to move. I heated it up a bit with a heatgun and then tapped it on.

I was shooting other airguns today but did have time to shoot one group with the Optimus from 75 yards (750fps). There was an annoying mild breeze that kept coming up and caught me on two shots. One went high and the other low. The breeze was sometimes coming towards me but must have had an up & down movement. Anyway, the best 8 shots formed a nice 2.49" ctc group.

Pretty good....I usually shoot small soup cans at 75 yards with the Nitro Venom .22...can't hit them EVERY time...but most of the time......if its TOO easy...I get bored with it so I stretch out the distance some more...Lots of good little shooting areas off Spruce River Road....
