Could someone please explain why replica airguns sometimes cost close to the same as the real thing (i.e. the gunpowder version they are replicating) or sometimes more?

For example, the Umarex Legends MP-40 list for $319.99 @ Cabela's https://www.cabelas.ca/product/100648/u ... uto-bb-gun

While the real one (in .22 LR) is only $599.99 @ Cabela's https://www.cabelas.ca/product/117489/g ... atic-rifle

Also same for new Legends Cowboy Lever Action which is listing for $346 @ Replica Air Guns (or Walther Lever Action which list for around $600) vs. a real Winchester or Henry 1894 https://www.cabelas.ca/product/3078/hen ... tion-rifle

As well as the Mosin-Nagant 1944 CO2 BB rifle @ $499. https://www.replicaairguns.ca/gletcher- ... 1944-rifle. I understand a good condition used Mosin can be acquired for less, and it has a real wood stock.

Does this make sense to anyone?

They been making firearms for way longer so they already have the tooling setup. They made and sold enough to lower the costs.

Where these airguns because they don't sell as many. So they cost much. Probably licensing fees, import fees etc.

But if you look at some guns. CZ around 100$ my real steal CZ SP01 used was 700$.

I agreed the replicas are over pricing too ~

A M92FS is selled as much as a HW40 / P3...

And UX making every pellet pistol using the same design, which I think the related design cost, molding, tools etc already been greatly lower down... So the final part is the licensing cost then?!

It pays to shop around.
Picked up my black 92 FS n.i.b. on sale at Cabela's for 179.00 which is about 100 bucks off.
IIRC, I got my MP-40 on a similar 100 off sale deal. Timing is everything. I think both were post-Christmas sales a year apart.

There are only a few examples where the replica is similar in price. Surplus firearms really shouldn't be in the comparison. You could get sks's for under $100 not that long ago. Pack away 500000 lower grade airguns for 50 years packed in cosmoline and try to sell them on the open market and see what kind of price you get. Something like an industry brand B2. I have both a m&p9 and it's replica and they certainly are not the same price range. Same goes for the CZ shadow. About 1/8 the cost of the real thing. Even the more expensive Sig MPX is 1/6 the price of the real thing. There may be exceptions but as long as they can charge more they will.

All bets are off when it comes to airsoft and Tokyo Mauri.

There are gun target shoots for pistols. Basically the same target shoots for powder burners and airsoft shoots. One you need a licence and one you don't. Why are fishing lures cheap until they are the most popular then they are the highest price?

Some truth. Because firearms are banned in say Japan/China. They have a huge mini IPSC market. IPSC is a run and gun style speed sport. Since they cannot use firearms, they use airsoft/airguns. So the market for them is kinda high. Esp in countries that cannot own them.

That why you see like the Sig X5 with the reddot mount, or the fancy Tangfoligo replicas. Other "IPSC" style guns.

Why should you compare the real firearm price to airsoft price? Those things have kind of different purpose. When you buy an airsoft rifle - it is more for game and hobby, while firearm is far from that. Also, when you`re going fishing or camping you prefer to have good quality gear, made from quality material, the same is with airsoft prices - good quality and reliability costs money.

why?
- Because they can
- Because people are willing to pay this much
- Because people don't want the hassle of getting their firearm's license.
- Because airguns are cheaper to feed than a powder-burner

Well I looked into pricing recently for these type of replica pistols from Umarex, like Walther, made in Germany. They double the wholesale price at the very least to cover duty fee and a tax. The duty is 7% of the shipment with 5% being tax which they can get back. Storage, insurance, free shipping for certain purchase amounts by customers. They are well made and enjoyed by a particular clientele. They make their money by buying in volume. The Canadian distributor ships free if the net sale is 1800$ or more. Or they go through a customs broker and buy from the USA. Not a cheap business to get into and doesn’t pay a lot per item sold. They have to keep the inventory moving to make it pay. That’s part of the story. Typical mark up to make $ in addition to what has already been posted. Notice as well these pistols, although well made, do not sell very well second hand and less than whole sale. I enjoy my very much and do plan to keep using them unless the bylaws in my area change. Love shooting at those b??r cans. :D
