That Circa 1850 tung Oil is what I use now, exclusively. Rub in each drop of oil really well and give the stock a good
48 hours to harden, each thin coat.

In my experience Tru oil is more of a "live" oil finish which when compared to Linseed which is a medium hard finish and Tung which is dry hard finish. I like tru oil as topical over previous hard tung oil finish. For instant my maple 1322 stock is tung oil and it feels like wood with more of a laquer finish as its very smooth and glossy to point it can be buffed with auto wax if wanted. So many finishes , so many choices. Post a pic when you decided and your done:)

Most of the FT guys are now using urethane to coat stocks, which seals them from moisture and water. If wood in stock gets moisture in it, it can cause POI changes due to swelling. Since FT guys shoot rain or shine, that is important. Also important to cost entire stock, not just the part you see.

No finish, even spar varnish (which I've used on duck and goose shotgun stocks) is water proof. Some are just better protectors
from moisture than others.
The English guns (AA etc), to me are not well finished & will benefit from further treatment if used in wet climates.

I agree with you on this Daryl. Some of the TX and Pro Sport stocks almost feel like bare wood. Further treatment would be a must if they were going to be used outdoors. They look a lot better when they have a good finish as well.

I agree also that waterproof is maybe not a thing with wood stock, but the more resistant they are to wet condition, the better it is for me when shooting a match in the rain. I pretty much shoot spring guns now and they have enough quirks when working well, so I just try to eliminate anything I can that can cause change.

The closest to a waterproof finish, would be one of the epoxy-dips that Browning, WTBY and some others use on their Cf rifle
and shotgun stocks.
Spar Varnish comes close, then a Varathane or Poly-Urethane might be next best. Spar Varnish works well on oars, for years,
then needs to be re-finished. I've a 'set' of ash oars that need refinishing.

Nice gun, with a beautiful piece of wood! I'm sure it will shoot as nice as it looks.

Maybe it's my OCD kicking-in. But a gun with blued steel high-gloss finish. Shouldn't it have matching blue-steel rings?

Thanks for the additional suggestions.

To Tim's point, if I decide to try a bit of field target, then rain can become an issue. As much as I'd love to do a nice oil finish, I'm now leaning towards a spar varnish or poly finish. I've had good results with spar varnish with canoe paddles just like Daryl, so I would think that would work well for the occasional time the stock would get wet.

More research and contemplation to go before making a final decision. :-)
