The stump was 32" x 30" and he figures about 60-70 years old.... Height was, at a guess, 70-80 ft.... Cost to take it down and split it up.... over $3K....

Cotton-wood makes sense as the lower trunk looks like it, however aspen that size also appear like that. The park down the street from me is loaded with them.
A few are about 8' in diameter.

Trembling Aspen, which is common in this area are easy to distinguish by the stem of the leaf.... It is flat and cannot be rolled between your fingers.... That thinness is what causes the leaves to flutter in the lightest breeze, leading to the name.... We have lots of them here as well, and currently they are undergoing an attack by the Aspen Leaf Miner.... The larvae burrow in between the upper and lower surfaces of the leaf, leaving serpentine trails and causing the leaves (and the whole tree) to look silver in appearance.... Most of the trees in the area are affected.... Generally it doesn't kill otherwise healthy Aspens.... but it sure stunts their growth from the reduction in Chlorophyll.... We need a really cold winter to kill the eggs....

WE also have that leaf minor in the aspen here and down at least to 100 mile house.
The 'blight' does not make it up through the Pine Pass to points North of the pass, though.
Those huge trees in the park are all cottonwoods.

Ya, Bob isn't allowed to operate a chainsaw., or any small engine tool, with his pacemaker. Also, that's a big tree right by his house.
I often watch "Darwin Award" tree felling videos for entertainment. I myself had a close call with a tree that decided to rotate when coming down. Fortunately it fell on my well head and some decorative bushes, but didn't hit any structure. It was a thick one, about 30" dia at the base, but only about 20' tall. I have never dropped anything quite as tall as Bobs cottonwood, but we have here in Ontario the Emerald Ash borer that has decimated our Ash trees. I have taken most of the dead ones on my property down by now. One in my front yard I was hesitant to drop because it was about 30 ft. it came down by itself one windy night, right between my boat and cars .

Wow, expensive!. There is alot of skill and equipment needed for tree removal thou.
