Well, I have just put the finishing touches on Optimus Prime, a true transformation from the barn find it started out as ( topic85249.html )well the stock that is. Here are pictures of the finished rifle with: Bronze muzzle weight, 4-16x40 AOE scope, 2 stage modded trigger. I'd love it if it was a .22 cal, but sadly its .177. :(

And some more close ups:
Stock finish was golden walnut on the fore stock, gunstock on the original stock. Followed by 6 coats of Starbrite teak oil, and finished with Howard's feed ;n wax (gives it the glossy appearance). For the future, I have parts to turn it into a NP, but I will need to be creative to keep it non-PAL. Right now I have it shooting very smooth at just under the limit - but like most of us, I need something to do, or I may not come back from crazy.

Thanks all, I have to work all afternoon today but hope to get it out shooting tomorrow.
Yes, I made the muzzle weight, sort of. It was from the scrap bin and had the original OD of 1" and an ID of 1/2" which I had to bore out to 19/32". Some tedious work without a lathe, but it fits nice and looks OK. And at my indoor range (9 yds) it did help with groups so it will stay there for now. Like I said in another post, it likes the Daisy HP - at least the old version. I got the Optimus earlier this year from barbas929 with a nice selection of pellets to try - the Daisys were the last ones I did try, after he said they were the gun's favourite for him, and I found that even after I had completely re tuned the gun (different piston, seal, spring, spring guides, lubes, etc it still likes the old Daisys best. Hopefully the new Daisys will be good too - but I haven't ordered them yet. I'm debating converting the Optimus to .22 Cal anyhow. But I may sell it and put the $ towards a different .22 project. :drinkers:

Looks very nice. Is it PAL rated?
I also have an Optimus in 17. To me it is the nicest looking of the Crosmans, though I prefer 22 also. Fortunately I also have a Phantom in 22 and can swap stocks anytime though not sure if the shorter barrel will look as nice. The only problem with that is although the Phantom has a relatively ugly stock it points and holds so very nice. Guess that is why we tend to have so many different models of the same thing.

What is going on, everyone is recoating stock. Maybe it is boring staying home during the virus time. It is sure nice work you did Duke! What is with the different forend anyhow? Did the original stock crack there?

Thanks, the stock was chopped and kept in a barn by PO so it was either fix or firewood. topic85249.html
This Optimus came with a Trail thumb hole stock, which I managed to put a scratch in while tuning it. So I decided to refinish it as well. So I'll have a choice of stocks for this one.

Here it is in both stocks, Op' in the Optimus base stock, and Op'' in the Trail stock.
