Looking to purchase an inexpensive sub-500 fps air rifle with open sights and scope or at least receiver dovetailed to mount a scope to teach the grandkids something of long arm safety and target shooting, local Calgary or area pickup would be great. Thanks.

I might be old school, but I firmly think kids should be taught open sights first, with the emphasis on safety, not on learning how to use a scope.
Guns that don't fit them well, are likely easier shot with open sights.
Red Ryder comes to mind.

Yeah, when trying to teach my daughter, I have difficulty to show her and let her know about the eye relief, field of view, focus.... And open sight just much easier~
