I am new to the hobby and have a couple questions:

1) I live primarily in downtown Toronto where can I shoot BBs and Pellets safely without getting into trouble. I assume when I head out to the cottage it's okay to shoot there.

2) I picked up a Diana Chaser CO2 Gun .22 and I am wondering what pellets I should get for
looking at H & N but there are many different types. I would ideally like a pellet I can use for close up medium game for example should a racoon come at me.

Crosman .22 14.3gr hollow point pellets are a reasonable place to start, not too expensive and not bad quality.

For hunting I like the Polymag pellets but they are a bit expensive and might not work in a magazine. They do a short version that is more magazine friendly.

Hello There~ welcome to the forum and the new life style ~ yeah, I agreed to that~

You can setup a quiet pellet trap with duct seal or other ideas (search the forum you will get surprise about there are just so many good ideas to make your own pellet traps) and practice shooting safely indoors. Better in the basement...

The 22 cal Chaser is a good start. Not too loud, accurate, not pellet picky, easy to handle... I like mine too~

For the pellets choice, as it's not a powerful gun, I prefer lighter pellets. H&N FTT is good but not too light... Another good quality one I think you can try JSB Exact RS, mine likes this too.

The raccoon is not a good target and shooting one will definitely bring you lots of trouble that you won't even want to just think about... So, forget this thought as fast as you can~

And they are tough, not your Chaser can handle.

For a non PAL co2 pistol or carbine, the best it can make an instant kill with good pellet placement in short range (10 yards something, maximum 15 to 20 yards) will be only rats... Maybe some birds too.

I would not assume. Anything that looks like a firearm could bring the police to your door wherever you are.

I used to hunt rabbits along the Bow River near the house here in Calgary (with a pellet rifle) when I was a kid... try that now and a police tactical team with helicopter would likely show up.

Do you need to have PAL for replicas?


Times sure have changed. I was going to go into the wooded areas that run throughout the city like green veins but I am sure the police would be on me like white on rice. They used to assume you were not guilty so they would leave you alone- now they assume you are guilty even if it is just a pellet air gun.

Looks like the basement it is lol. I wasn't planning to shoot any animals except in self defense lol.

No need a licence for any gun shooting below 500fps. Replicas on co2 usually just do less than 400fps, mostly around just 300ish...

If you have time, the general safety info and other knowledge regarding the guns on a course towards the PAL will be helpful and informative. I will encourage anyone like guns and shooting to take the course.

I had lots of concerns when I read the original post.
Others have already addressed them but I think it is a great opportunity to point out to some new airgunners that even though a sub 500fps gun is not considered to be a firearm, it is not the same as a toy. Also if you plan to openly carry one around you will likely attract more attention than you want, and the more people who are around, the more likelihood that someone will complain and police will be involved.

I am not opposed to hunting - I used to do a lot of it, however I do not condone shooting an animal just to wound it and that is what you would be doing with that rifle if you shoot a racoon.

I am guessing that you are likely a bit larger than a racoon and in the very unlikely event that you need to defend yourself, given the choice of that gun or a walking stick, I would suggest the stick every time.

As Yep suggested, a gun safety course is a great idea for anyone starting shooting any kind of gun and a hunter safety course is a great idea for anyone that is thinking about shooting at anything with a pulse.

I concur with the advise provided by other posters.
Specifically:
-A basic gun safety course is always a good idea, even if you are just using airguns. Especially if you don't have a lot of experience.
-I really doubt a sub 500 fps airgun is going to kill a raccoon, unless it is a head shot at point blank range. Even if it is a .22 cal. Raccoons normally don't attack people, unless you are a threat to them or their young. So for self defense from raccoons, just keep your distance & carry a big stick. My feeing is never shoot at any animal, unless you have a powerfully enough airgun to humanly kill it with one shot.
- Not sure an airgun is your best idea to defend against any animal. Though some people in the southern USA talk about using them to defend against snakes.
- Indoor basement ranges can be a lot of fun. Although some say you need 30 ft. to set up a range, I have found that anything over 20 ft. should work well.
- Proper planning in setting up a basement range is always a good idea. Lots of articles on the subject. Here is parts of a 3 part article on it;

-I find Crosman Hollow points are a good basic hunting pellet. But for indoor target shooting I prefer flat head pellets. I really like Stoeger X-Match Precision .22 cal. flathead pellets
-Some replica air rifles require a PAL. For example, the Umarex Legends Cowboy Lever Action, Ruger 1022, Sig Sauer MPX & MCX, etc.

Yeah, the Stoeger X-Match is a very good pellet . But it's a pity I doubt you can find any in the market now...

As a replacement, you can try the H&N Sport which is said they are the same pellet just under two different brand names...

No one can beat Nick (eBay store / seller 'nikkonos') if you want H&N pellets in Canada... However just checked and the 22 cal Sport is out of stock too...

It's no harm to send a message to Nick and ask when will be the new shipment in tho..

I have my last two tins that I bought when Cabela's clearing out the stock... So my HW35 is on a diet of other ' varieties ' pellets and I am not willing to use them out in the moment....
