Hi,

I am new to the hobby. Landed on many of your posts when researching air rifles for small game hunting that doesn’t require PAL.

I have learned that I need PAL for a decent air rifle beyond 500fps for small games.

I will be taking my firearm classes soon and apply for PAL.

In the mean time, I am deciding between a Croaman Phantom 22 and a CrossmanF11 22.

Idea is to upgrade the rifle to faster fps once I get my PAL and in the mean time enjoy practicing it in its stock version.

Are the new phantoms upgradable? Please advise. If not I will go with F11 which I believe is all nitro piston and no springs. Any alternative is also welcomed. For some reason I am stuck to 22 CAL because I read that’s ideal for small games as it has a good energy transfer compared to a 17 CAL.

Thanks in advance!
JJ

Welcome, Jackjack. My last 2 Crosman have had bad barrels. you should wait for your Pal to buy, You will be able to buy aEuropean .22 for a little more money. There is a full power crosman now selling in the $149 range, you will spend more money to upgrade the metal spring or the gas ram than buying a full power gun

Take a look here

There are a lot more dealers so look around, don't buy the wrong gun and have a dust collector that you can't sell.

Welcome!
You do not need a PAL to hunt in Ontario but you will need to take the hunter's education course, buy an outdoors card and also buy a small game license.

Thanks Robert. My understanding is PAL wait times are longer and hence was going for a under 500 fps rifle to pacify my interest and practice in the meantime. I have never held or fired any kind of air rifle (or firearm) ever.

I will check the links provided.

Thank you. I will do that. I had a Outdoors card with Fishing license that expired 2 years ago.

And another reason I was looking for a under 500 fps rifle is based on assumption that it will be ok to fire one in the backyard as opposed to a PAL rifle.
