High Flight
John Gillespie Magee, Jr

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, --and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of --Wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air...
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark or even eagle flew --
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

In Loving Memory of my Uncle, F/L John Rutherford Sterne, DFC, 1922-1943

In Flanders Fields
By John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Great pic of your Uncle Bob. My Uncle,Gerald D'Eon, was lost at sea in the North Atlantic March 26 1941.His ship, the HMCS Otter caught fire and went down. There were some survivors but he was not so lucky.

I guess I could say my uncle was one of the "lucky ones" as he came home......

He had many good days and few bad days as well. My aunt used to protect him on his bad days by saying "uncle John is not feeling good today, come over tomorrow when he's feeling better."

My dad made it very clear to me to never ask uncle John about any war stories. My dad asked him once on his return and that was the last of it. His older brother was never the same!

We/us "boomers" will always remember and never forget their sacrifice.

Unfortunately, these wars, how they were fought and won, is not taught to day in schools.
If we forget, they will be repeated. Appears were are on a run on that path, today.
