An HW97 in .22 will be a 13.5 to 15.0 fpe rifle depending on the pellet used.
That means it will quite likely NOT shoot over 700fps with any normal lead pellet.
Even my HW98 in .22 did not exceed 680fps, running 620fps to about 678fps.
This is not to say that there won't be a spring kit for it, to get it over 700fps.
The .177, due to much lighter pellets, ran 840fps to 900fps.

I agree with Daryl on this. The .177 will definitely reach out further with less hold over. You also have some really nice heavy .177 options, like the Redesigned Monsters from JSB and also some slugs that may work ok. Great versatility with the .177 now.

Yeah I had already decided about 20 minutes ago that the .177 is the one for me . You've added more reasons. :D

Here is a range of pellet tests in my HW97, 177 when it was new.
The top target and bottom targets are both 20- yards, The one in the middle is 50' or 17M.

56 yards with a Predator Pellet, HW97 Blackline in .177. No exits.
Shot over 200 of these one afternoon in under 3 hours.

for long range your going to want a heavier pellet so a 22 would be best

both 177 and 22 can have equal power it depends how fast the pellet goes...heavier pellets can handle more speed and range...

There is an upper limit as to how fast a .22 pellet can be shot out of an HW97, TX200, LGU etc., and still have it shoot the way you want these rifles to shoot. At similar power, the .177 will be travelling much faster than the .22 and the trajectory is much shallower. Without stressing the gun, the .22 upper limit is about 700 fps as Daryl stated.

Even a heavy .177, like the 13,43 gr monsters are going to go faster and they have an excellent BC. If you use the light .22, like the JSB RS at 13.43 gr, you simply push more air and gain nothing. The .177 monsters have a great reputation for accuracy and not many guns shoot the .22 RS very well at distance, although many shoot the 16 to 18 grain .22 pellets really well.

I know there are die hard .22 folks that simply think it is the best caliber, but make sure you can back it with solid results. I am not talking about a group you once shot and it was awesome. Both are good calibers and the choices in .177 and .22 are growing fast.

Keep in mind, I am referring to the spring rifles mentioned above, not the so called "Magnum" springers or PCP guns.

One thing about .22's compared to the same make in .177's, is as Mac has stated. The .177 will be much flatter shooting. That is not to say the .22 will not
have as good a "range" as a .177's, just that you will have to do your homework on getting your range zeros on the MOA, M-rad or Mil Dot reticle. I have a mill dot reticle
on the 3-12X scopes I have on my 2 M97's. These scopes have 1/2 mil dot slashes and make "setting" up zeros very easy for both guns. IIRC, I needed only the top 1/2 mil dot slash
to make those 56yards shots on gophers with the .177, but 2 mil full dots down to make the same hits with the .22. Once I had the zeros, I was easily able to hit the 66 and 77yard
silhouettes on our small bore range with both rifles, shot after shot.
There was a HUGE difference in trajectory between the 8gr. .177's and the 15.89gr. .22's.
This was due to the 200fps difference in velocity, even though the .22's have a slightly higher BC than the .177's.
Seems to me, the TX200 does put out slightly higher velocity than the HW97, in .22 cal.
66 yard (second berm) pig shot with 18.89gr. Barricuda Hunter HP's. These are not the best pellet for this rifle(HW97).

What spring 'kit' was that abslayer?
The shooting I did above, was before I found the Hades was a LOT more accurate.
In the Condor, I was easily shooting the little ram at 100meters(109yds), then went to splashing 1" to 2" rocks on the far bank
at 118yards.

Thanks.
Here's a TX200 FT shooter testing the HW97KT, like mine, bit lower powered, 12fpe rifle.
Good video and shows a person has a learning curve, with each different rifle.
