Some of you asked about equipment. I will make a quick list of popular air rifles and scopes for each Division of FT in Canada. I will miss some, but you will have an idea at least. I will try to put some prices down, but they are ballpark as prices in Canada and the US are usually different, and new vs. used costs have to be considered.

Hunter Division
- In this division spring guns, Co2, SSP and PCP guns shoot together.
- BAM, Crosman, Slavia, Beeman, HW, RWS, etc. Bring what you have.
- This division is the easiest to start out in.
- Low overall cost is very possible. Many of you will already own equipment for this division.
- Sporter style piston and PCP guns will be most popular in this division.
- Match guns are allowed (with certain limitations), but will not be the most popular in this division likely.
Popular Scopes:
- Any power scope can be used, but must be set at 15x or lower. I would recommend at least a 9x.
- Very little money needs to be spent for a scope in this class, but more money spent usually results in a better scope.

Piston Division
Popular guns:
- Air Arms TX 200 (719 and up Canada - 560 on up USA - less used)
- HW97 (519 and up Canada - 499 USA - less used)
- Air Arms TX200SR (rare - used only - 700 up USA usually)
- Whiscombe 50/60/65/70 (rare - expensive 3000+ usually- limited in number)
- Diana 54 (500 up in USA - 629 up Canada - less used)
- Note: Any springer can be used that shoots below 20fpe so much less money can be spent on other springers for this Division.
Popular scopes:
- Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24/8-32 (550-650 Canada- 400-500 USA - less used)
- Leapers 8-32x56 side focus (250 in Canada - less in the US - less used)
- Simmons 44 Mag 6.5-20x44 (used only 100-150 used USA Canada)
- Note: Any scope can be used in this Division.

PCP Division
Popular guns:
- Air Arms MPR FT (985 USA - less used)
- Air Arms NJR 100 (used only - price varies)
- Air Arms Pro Target (used only - 900-1100)
- Mac1 USFT (base 1650 USA (?) on up new)
- Air Arms EV2 (1800 new USA)
- Walther Dominator (2200 in Canada - less in the US- less used)
- Stery LG100/110FT (2600 in Canada- around the same USA - less used)
- FWB P70FT (2500 in the USA - less used)
- Note: Sporter PCP's like the BAM B50/51, Logun Solo, Air Arms s300/400/410, Theoben's, Daystate's, FX's, etc. all have enough accuracy to be competitive in this class. So much less money can be spent then the popular guns I listed above. C02 guns can be used as well.
Popular Scopes:
- Nikko Sterling 10-50x60 (700 in the USA - less used)
- BSA 10-50x60 (used only 500-600)
- Bushnell 8-32x40 (550-650 in Canada - less in the US- less used)
- Leupold Competition 35/40/45 (1000 new USA - less used)
- Leapers 8-32x56 (250 Canada - less in USA - less used)
- Note: Any scope can be used in this Division.

Ammunition:
- The CAFTA definition of pellets are, "Any design of pellet that is completely constructed of lead, zinc, or their alloys, may be used."

Pellets (most used types):
- Crosman Premier light (7.9g)
- Crosman Premier heavy (10.5g)
- JBS Exact (8.44g)
- JSB Heavy (10.2g)
- Beeman FTS (8.9g)
- Beeman Kodiak and Kodiak Match (10.6g)
- H&N Barracuda (10.6)
Note: Crosman Premiers and JSB's almost completely dominate the Field Target scene. They are the very strong majority. The others listed are also used, but not nearly as frequently these days. If you use a .22, I would suggest trying the Crosman Premiers or the JSB's first as well. Certainly there will be other pellets that work well in your gun, and maybe even better then the ones listed above. But the odds are one of the above pellets will be best, so you may want to try them first. By the way, the lighter weight pellets are usually used in spring guns and low powered PCP's. Most .177 spring guns are shooting under 15fpe, and many owners find they shoot best in the 12-13fpe range. The heavier pellets are usually used in higher powered PCP's.

One thing we can see is that you don't necessarily have to spend a LOT to shoot Field Target.

If you want to compete for top score, you will have to spend a fair bit.

The more you spend on a scope, usually the better the scope it.

PCP's usually post higher scores.

Most quality PCP's (sporter and match) have enough accuracy potential to score near perfect at every match. The rest is up to the shooter.

Isolated Field Target guns usually have the ergonomic advantage. They are shaped to fit the FT shooter better.

Come out and give Field Target a try!!

Question regarding the Hunter Division....
When you say scope must be set at 15X or lower, does this mean that a scope capable of exceeding the 15x power can still be used just not brought up any higher then the 15X limit set?

Over here (I think its the same everywhere) in Hunter, once you set your scope at the first peg then you can not change anything on it. This means, if you set the zoom to 10 it has to stay there, same for paralax, once set (Usually about 25 yds) it has to stay there.

I normally set mine to 9 mag and 25yds, that way its not to bad focus on the close ones or the distant ones.

Thanks so much for this post! I was wondering if you could provide similar information on pellets? Just curious what the popular (and legal) brands/styles/weights/calibers are?
Thanks again!

Does that apply here in Canada?....

I don't think it is but somebody in the FT here can clarify that.

I can imagine it would be more challenging ..... using mildot ....

Has anybody been seen trying the course with irons, or is this not even possible?

No...the "set it and leave it" rule does not apply here in Canada.

In summary, CAFTA (Canadian Field Target Association) rules on optics as they apply to Hunter Division are:
"Optical sights may not be set higher than 15 times magnification. Clicks may be used on the turrets and focusing is allowed to obtain a sharp image. All distance markings must be covered. Any reticule is allowed."

I have not seen anyone do that reciently, but have head that some have (from what I recall).

Sure it's possible. Especially with the new Hunter Division.

Even if you hit the target, in any location, it counts as 1 point.

Hit the kill zone, and the target falls, counts for 2 points.

Hunter Division has it's own scoring system.
