What works well? I see a max 18" height in the rules, will a short step stool suffice? What postions are used in Hunter Class?

The 18" seat is allowed in PCP, Piston, and Hunter, but not in PCP and
Piston Limited. There it is a maximum of 6". Cushions and bum bags are
also limited to 6" maximum height. Any position is allowed in Hunter, but
there will be some limitations to what you can do with your equipment.
You will be able to use natural support for your rifle, like a fallen log, tree
branch, or rock, but you cannot use your seat or cushion to support the
rifle. Right now, I would be more concerned about getting together with a
few people to try the sport, than the particulars and nuances of the rules.
Broad strokes first, details will follow.

I have been using an older Woodstream Sportsman's Stool that I picked up at a yard sale. They have a couple of removeable trays under the seat portion for tools/pellet tins, etc. and the very bottom section is ideal for bug spray, and any larger items you might want to carry with you. They are around 16" high at the highest point, and have a carry handle built into the seat portion. These are no longer made (AFAIK), but usually turn up at yard sales, gun shows, flea markets, etc.
