There's enough differences in bores from the same manufacturer that you should do your own testing. Air gun bores can be very individualistic. That being said, there are a few givens- such as the Gamo HPA gold that everyone agrees on being a total waste of time. Personally, I think that pellet testing is a huge part of the individual experience. Best place to start is with a known good platform gun- of which there are a lot of good recommendations on this site...

You raise many good points there.

I have to agree completely with Doc's post (above0...Buy a gun that is KNOWN to be of at least average quality....shoot 100-200 through it of some el-cheapo lead pellets-just to get things settled in. Then buy 3-4 tins (250ct. if you can get them) of some of the most often mentioned brands ie; JSB, RWS, H&N, Crosman, etc, etc. Clean barrel..then shoot enough pellets that you can see a consistent result, good or bad. Mark your targets with info, as you may need to refer to it later... clean barrel, go to next pellet and repeat as necessary. After each barrel cleaning I would shoot say 10 pellets through it, BEFORE recording any test results....no proof that it is necesary, it just gives me confidence :D Ya MAY luck out and find the best pellet right off...although that has never happened to me personally..I literally have thrown away hundreds of dollars worth of pellets that simply SUCKED, no matter what gun I tried them in (like Gamo's for example) just my $0.02 worth--YMMV
