I'm looking to purchase a rifle and scope for a hunter field target rig.
This will also double as my "fun gun" as it will be used for plinking, casual target shooting etc.
I have a pretty good idea as to what I want, but I was wondering what everyone else would consider their ultimate hunter rig?
Which rifle? Which scope? Which caliber? Why? Why? Why?

well for the 'fun' factor it should be multishot. I'd also want something pointable so keep it short. For the scope, since you want t for hunter, 16x max, and that Bushnell 6500 that Windbag and Mac own is awesome (but it ain't cheap)

You can't go wrong with a AA S410 but I also really like the BSA S10 Bull Barrel Carbine. Yes it's a bottle gun but that gives you a tonne of shots before needing a refill.

I've always liked .177 over .22 it's a flatter trajectory at 20ftlbs.

HW100SK .177 topped off with a Bushnell 6500 Elite 2.5-16 x42mm. This is basically the rig I shot at the last Elmer Fudd except I have the 100"S" longer version. I can get between 50 and 60 shots from a full fill until I hit the "yellow" zone. I can still get many more useful shots well into the yellow zone. Last week I put 98 shots (7 full mags) into a 1" kill zone from 50 yards on 1 fill. It might do many more but that's where I stopped. I figured that was plenty enough to last a whole day out in the field and sufficient accuracy to maintain head shots out to that distance.

I would use a S410 Carbine in .177 with a longer air tube to get more shots, topped with a Bushnell 6500, 2.5-16. That would be a 12 ft/lb version and I would shoot the JSB 8.44gr, 4.53 pellets. If going full power, I would have an S400 or S410. I used the S400-SL this year with the scope I mentioned in the Fudd match and did OK. I shot the S400 at about 15ft/lb with JSBH pellets and the shot cycle was pure silky smooth. My S400 just loves the .177 heavy JSB pellets.

I keep forgetting about the HW100. Windbag is right they are amazingly accurate and extreamely well made. I'd love to see the Carbine version

Thanks for the replies guys!
It appears many of us agree on what makes an excellent hunter setup.
I already purchased one of those Bushnell 6500s, but it may go on a friend's rifle who I'm introducing to FT.

Who makes the smallest/lightest quality scope that magnifies 16x?

Just put my deposit down on an HW100SK in .177. Should be in the next shipment from Weihrauch to SSS. Now the wait begins :?

Does anybody know if I'd be able to get away with Sportsmatch Low mounts to install the Bushnell 6500 2.5-16x42 on the HW?
I just used medium mounts to mount a Bushy on an S400, and there is about 7mm of clearance still between the bottom of the scope and the top of the barrel. I'd like the scope to be as low on the HW100 as possible.

Congrats! Can't wait to see that one! My 100S required Millet Angle Loc High's to mount my 4200 8-32. The medium's were a smidge too low. Can't speak for the Sportsmatch but I think it best you wait to get your hands on the rifle first as the barrel band may come into play on the shorter model...
