I shoot all under 500 fps. I use a pellet trap with a layer of duct seal putty in the back. Change the putty when too full of pellets. Works great!

I carefully remove the duct seal slabs( hopefully all together), reverse it and stick back onto the inside of the drawer I use.

Hey glen,
I'm sure you've figured it out by now but if not, get yourself about 12 bars of grey plumbers putty and pack it onto 1/4 " ply that you have framed with 1 by 2 pine or fir. You now have the perfect silent pellet trap. Good luck!

I’m new here so this may not get posted right away. Just sharing my backyard backstop information. I made a 12” x 16” box of rough pine that is 12” deep. Inside hangs a half dozen layers of rubber roofing which slow down the pellet before it hits the back wall which is 1” pine. The rubber stops any ricochet and also quietness the sound of impact. Spent pellets drop to the bottom. I hang paper targets at the front and the enclosure fits standard 12x16 target sheets.
This has been working well for me.
FYI

Just to add to the discussion a bit because it hasn't been mentioned.

For Sub-500fps only ... in my workshop when test firing with a pellet, I shoot into four layers of loosely hung felt blanket.

Pellets penetrate tight surfaces, but when the surface is loose, like layers of loosely hung material, the layers just absorb the energy like a curtain in the wind, and the pellet isn't even deformed. In many cases, you can reuse your pellets if you reshape the skirt a bit for a snug fit. Wash hands after!

The kinetic energy of the pellet is spread around the deformation of the felt layers. The felt doesn't even get penetrated!

Tested with 450 fps approx.

They never bounce back. I use 4 layers to be safe.

You can use something like a furniture moving blanket, those grey ones that look like packed wool... something like that. just hang the layers loosely behind your target frame or bracket for your paper targets or whatever you use. You can literally use a few coat hangers for the felt layers AND to hold your target with a few black paper clamps onto a coat hanger.

Not for firearms, or PAL rated air rifles.
