I'm thinking about sanding the outer barrel,slide rod and the breach.

Type of sandpaper?
Grit?
Other ways?

Ideas would be appreciated...

Buy a piece of glass from the glass store. 8mm. I use that to get parts near perfectly flat. Work up through the grits from 220 to 3500. Wet and dry sandpaper. Use water or kerosene.

I use nail polish remover to remove the paint so it puts a lot less scratches on the metal, then the finest steel wool to get in the pitted areas and I finish it off with polishing compounds.
You can go with finer and finer compunds until you have a mirror/chrome like finish.
