Cool idea, where do you find a cheap gem tumbler?
Ive noticed the ridges on the skirts of some pellets like the RWS Hobby, are those ridges helpful?

I wonder if mixing them in with a cup of silica sand and only tumbling them for a very short period would do the trick? For that matter, one could fashion a hand-cranked tumbler from household items if the sand proved to be effective. Then, of course, use a simple strainer to separate the two.

I would stay FAR away from any type of abrasive.... Even if it doesn't get packed into the skirt of pellet, you have a good chance of the hard abrasive becoming imbedded in the soft lead and then damaging the bore of your rifle when you shoot it.... I'm thinking that with bullets, the tumbling period might have to be quite short (maybe only a matter of minutes?) because of the weight of the individual bullets.... I wonder if the process is too severe, if filling the container with enough water to cover the bullets might be a good idea to provide a slight cushioning....

What an enterprising bit of research, Mr. Hickey, good on you. It is going to be interesting to see how "hickey improved" pellets fare in fussy barrels which only shoot one brand/type accurately. With quality european pellets becoming pricier, i wonder how much we could improve cheaper pellets from asia and s. america? Has anyone here have any experience with s. american [brazil] pellets? I wonder if the improved pellets roll the same in roll-sorting methodology? I'm going to have to borrow/get a tumbler, and i hope that someone finds the time to do more experimenting with this.

You can make your own basic Tumbler for cheap.
there are many ways to do it here are some basic easy ideas. :wink:

I had a tumbler i sold after I moved up here! Upright model. Could do 750 .45 brass hulls at a time! They make smaller ones which would be perfect for pellets. They had a basket after tumbling that would knock loose all the media. But the holes in it would probably be too small for .177.

my tumbler is made of rubber around the circumference and hard plastic top and bottom. It was pricey though. IIRC around $60. My wife is into beach stone polishing. The rubber inside is necessary to tumble the pellet,s rather than have them slide around. Bob is right. a short tumble 5 to 10 minutes seems plenty. longer, produces a nice shiny head, but the skirt,s compact too much.
