What about heating and dropping it into oil ?
Might be able to heat blue the chrome.

Thank you for your suggestion. However, I'm aiming for a blued, low-gloss or matte finish.

I don't know what "gold chrome" is but muriatic acid will remove regular chrome. Then you will have a nickel plated part. Under the nickel will be copper plating. The acid should remove all of it.

Just a note, I tried a corrosive cleaner much like Easy Off (Zep purple to be exact) to clean paint that had hardened in my paint sprayer. It removed the paint but turned the aluminum black. T'was a bugger to clean that off.

I bought a plastic bottle of Muriatic acid years ago for a job - can't remember what for - however after I cracked the lid and used it for whatever it was I needed it for, replacing the lid did not prevent the fumes that seemed to come from or through the cap, from rusting anything remotely close to that bottle of acid. I finally ditched the acid and the rusting stopped - go figure. It was fine until I opened it, then the rusting started.

Beware - is all I'm attempting to say!

I removed the chrome on the trigger and other misc parts of my Beeman P17. Mostly I sanded it off. Sanding the flat spots I put the paper on a flat surface and slid the part around on it. For rounded surfaces I used a sanding disc in my Dremel. For hard to reach places like finger grooves I used a very thin 1/64" cutting disc in the Dremel. Once free of the chrome and copper it blued fairly well. Being cast it won't look as good as other parts, but it worked well enough. I used EPI IB333 which is excellent, but Formula 44/40 is similar.
I agree 100% that chrome is no place for a gun.

Except inside the bore of the barrel.
