I picked up one of those auto resetting targets from the Princess Auto sale at $10. It works a charm, but the paddles are a bit on the big side for the distances I normally shoot (although my offhand is about bad enough for it to be useful even close up!), and it's a bit wobbly and prone to falling over. So I solved both problems by making a simple frame for it to go in, with a steel bar across the front. I'm going to make up a set of bars with different size openings in. This first one has 1/4" and it's quite a challenge for me to get a clean shot through even rested at 10m. I'm guessing that 3/8" will be good for FT seated style shooting and I'll try and get my standing up to being able to use a 1/2" zone - that may take a while :)

The front legs of the target slot into long holes drilled into the stand, so that fixes the stability problems. I threw some LED lights in there so that the flippers (now painted orange) appear to glow nicely through the openings and the shoot and sees stuck on the front let me see which way I'm pulling when I miss. Only downside so far is that the pellets get shredded by the steel plate on a partial hit, so there's more mess than before. Such is life. The steel is 1/8" thick 2" wide bar and looks like it will stand the punishment with no worries at all.

Great idea! Parker101 made targets similar in function to that target, but made them out of thicker steel and with a variety of sizes on the paddles. He made them for non-pal guns which went up easy with the low power and ones for higher power that needed more energy to knock the paddles up. I am really glad I picked up a few before he was forced to stop making targets. Hopefully he will get back to it in the not too distant future.

With a change of that front plate, you have whatever size you want; good thinking.

Nice handiwork!

as long as you have a wall right behind there, I don't see a need for a back stop...

Especially for indoors, a box to control splatter is a good idea.

I only shoot my spinners and field targets outdoors to prevent any lead dust from getting in my home. A garage would be fine for me.

I shoot into a .22 trap with the front taped up completely with a plastic tape. As soon as there are a good number of holes, I re-coat the tape or replace it if it is time to clean out the trap. This way no dust escapes. I always use domed pellets, so the hole almost closes in the plastic tape after the pellet has passed through. I also use multi bull target sheets and will take a maximum of five shots per bull, so I do not end up with real big holes in the tape from shooting 25 to 30 times in the same spot.

Good job as always Jim!
Rifle practice is a big challenge. WIsh you could find an instructor nearby. I would do it gratis, if I lived nearby!

Thanks Rick. Perhaps I should move out west :) I've been picking up tips from the more experienced guys at the club and that's made a big difference, but for sure I still have a long way to go. Part of the problem is that rifle shooting is just plain hard work - I can only shoot a few minutes standing before all my muscles start complaining! FT style sitting isn't much better, although finding a comfy cushion has helped. Shooting rested is nice though, don't have to support the weight of the rifle and can just zone out (or is that zone in?) through the scope. Love seeing the pellets go where I want them to.
