Nope, just Chrony testing, inside my shop, for now.... This gun is the same power as an Air Force Texan .45....

Funny enough, I just saw two nice bucks (both 4+ points) close to your place by Coalmont back in November, Bob. It was about 5:30AM on the Princeton side of the town right on the road. They were battling it out really hard, antlers locked and throwing each other right into the road! Their season was closed at that point, but it was quite the sight. We stopped to watch them for a while before heading up past Otter Lake looking for moose.

Hi Bob. Great work! Lyman used to have a mould for squib loads in the 45/70 that was
Nick-named the collar-button. IIRC, it weighed 210 gr. And was a short semi-pointed bullet
with one large grease groove in the middle with driving bands at either end. That might make
the velocity a little higher than wanted, though. Lyman also made 240-260gr. and 270gr. Mould for the 45/60
Winch. And 450 3 1/4" Express.
RCBS makes a super DC 300gr. Mould. I've shot 2 Elk with that one using a .45 Colt chambered M94 Trapper.

Daryl, something in the 270-300 gr. range would probably be ideal.... but the trajectory of that 336 gr. at 800 fps is flat enough for deer.... Sighted at 50 yards, hits plus or minus 1" out to 60 yards.... The reticle is the good old 30-30, and at 7X the lower post is dead on at 85 yards, and halfway between that and the crosshairs is fine for 70-80 yards.... At 100, it should be about 4" below the tip of the lower post, and I would never take anything past that.... although it should still have 445 FPE at 100 yards....

I mounted the .410 shotgun upper on the Hayabusa today to see what it does with the new SS Valve.... Here is the test load, three 36 cal roundball that weighs a total of 204 gr.... The wad is intended for 1/2 oz. of lead shot (219 gr.), so it should give a pretty good indication of the velocity.... The case is a shortened 2.5" all brass case with the primer pocket drilled out to 3/8", the same size as all the other ports....



The Chrony is a bit reluctant to measure the velocity, throwing low velocity errors (eg. 550 fps) if the wad cup separates early, but discarding the obviously wrong readings I got a three shot average of 850 fps (846, 849, 856)…. That is actually a bit better than I got before, so I'm very pleased.... It works out to 327 FPE, just about what I expected, based on the ratio of bore volumes of the .410 shotgun and .457 rifle....

There is always the #457122 Lyman HP. Mould, about 360gr. In pure lead.
450fpe at 100yds. puts you in the magnum handgun power range, certainly more than enough for deer sized (and even bigger) game animals. Have you tried SWC shaped bullets? Reason I ask, is they are usually the best choice for handgun velocity big game animals.

No I haven't tried SWCs or Keith profiles.... The three Lee moulds (RB, 216 & 336 gr.) are all I have at present.... I would think a SWC at my muzzle velocities would end up slower than a magnum handgun downrange, no?....
