I finally got back into the shop to finish off the breeches for the Hayabusa Mk.3.... Here they are with the barrels installed.... The .457 rifle barrel is 30" long, the .410 shotgun barrel is 25" including the poly-choke....

Image

In this photo, you can see the basic differences in the breeches.... The .457 rifle (top) has provision for a shroud, and a shorter loading port, and a dovetail for a scope.... The .410 shotgun (bottom) is longer overall, with a longer loading port to accommodate the shotshell, and a Picatiinny rail forward of the port for mounting a Holosight....

Image

The third photo shows the bottom and side views, with the monster transfer port visible.... It is 1/2" OD with a 3/8" ID and the flow-though bolts have the same size passage....

Image

The next steps are a cocking handle for the hammer (you can see the clearance slot in the breeches, below the loading port), make the transfer ports (from 1/2" Teflon rod), strip the valve out to chase a leak, and it will be ready to assemble and test.... My biggest concern at that point is assuring I have an adequate backstop....

Bob

Nice Bob!
Are you using a .500" probe too? I would just assume so.
What old shotgun did you take off the variable choke from? Looks like an old Savage/Stevens?

That C-lect choke sticks out like a sore thumb. Late 50's-early 60's Mossberg 410 bolt gun. The model # escapes me right now.

Kinda sad in a way- those old bolt Mossy .410's were fast on rising grouse...

After over two years of planning and a year of building, the Hayabusa .410 Shotgun is together for the first time....

Image

The only parts carried over from the original Hayabusa are the stock and the trigger group, and the overall layout.... It uses a 500 cc 250 bar (3625 psi) tank mounted in one of my reverse tank blocks, feeding a 1" ID plenum that adds another 140 cc for a total of 640 cc (39 CI) of air on board.... The main tube, hammer, valve, and tank are shared with the .457 cal rifle version, which has its own breech, as detailed above....

I spent a lot of today calibrating the Poly-Choke, which was missing the markings for the various choke positions.... I made a steel plug gauge which started at 0.410", adjusted the choke until the fingers just dragged on the gauge, marked the choke for Cylinder bore, turned the gauge to 0.406", marked the Improved Cylinder position, turned it down again to 0.402" for Modified and marked that, and then turned it down to 0.395" for Full Choke and marked that position as well.... Now you just screw in the sleeve to the appropriate mark and voila, the choke you need.... I also made and installed the cocking handle for the hammer, before assembling the gun for the first time.... It weighs just a couple of ounces under 10 lbs. complete with the sight.... The only thing I have left to make is the transfer port seal....

The probe is just under 1/2" OD on the rifle (1/2" bolt), and 0.530 on the shotgun (just under the rim size of the .410 case) and the bolt it 9/16".... Yes, Doc, I believe the barrel was from a Mossberg....

I think the choke is a great idea.
How is the balance of the rifle Bob?

Balance is good, a lot of the mass is the tank, and that's right in your forward hand (it's the foregrip).... The gun is heavy for a shotgun, though.... but I knew that going in.... No idea yet what the velocity and shot count will be.... First tests will be three 000 Buck, a total of 200 gr, in a standard plastic wad....

Image Image

The shell is a shortened all brass 2.5" with the primer hole drilled to 3/8".... with a wad made for 1/2 oz. of shot.... I'll be using #8 shot, 1/2 oz. works out to 219 gr....

It's going to be interesting to see what that can do! What are your expectations for shots/fill?

Well, at 400 FPE (200 gr. @ 950 fps) you can figure 400 CI per shot.... If I can use 1000 psi and stay within a decent ES, that is (1000/14.5) x 39 = 2689 CI.... Divide by 400, that is roughly 7 shots.... If the power is higher, or the efficiency lower, then fewer.... but I'd be happy with that....

39ci of air :) , that's going to be a heck of a gun . id be interested as to the speed of 1 ball in the tight plastic cup vs 3.

Too fast!.... *LOL*.... I would guess two 000 Buck would be close to supersonic....

Will the choke cope with the 000 or will you remove it for that?

Yes, the 000 Buck is only 0.36", it fits inside the plastic shot cup no problem.... I will, however, run it at the cylinder bore setting (no choke).... The wad with the 000 Buck inside only measures 0.391-0.393", and my full choke setting is 0.395"....

The plastic over shot card idea doesn't work too well in .410, at least with the smaller shot sizes.
Patterns have a tendency to get blown to less than 55% / @30" @ 30 yds ~ which means holes in your pattern big enough for a large grouse to fly through with #6 shot, full choke. Dispersion seems to be just as bad with 7 1/2's with the same over shot card.

You may be okay with a card over 2 or 3 buck balls.
Unfortunately, I can't think of anything right now that would work, other than a CCI type gelatin capsule,
but that's a lot of farting around.
Good luck with the experimenting!

Regards,

Doc Sharptail

All I need is something to keep the shot from rolling down the barrel.... I will be using #8 shot to increase the pattern density because I will only be using 1/2 oz. loads.... I only anticipate this being a close range gun.... We'll see what happens.... It's just something I've always wanted to try....

What's wrong with a tiniest of crimps and some heavy cardboard? The force of the shot should unroll the crimp okay. Just need to make yourself a simple crimp die.
