Lathes are great if you have enough length for a couple of nuts locked together.... I frequently am shortening something like a 1/4" SHCS to 3/16", or similar jobs, where holding the screw in the lathe chuck is difficult.... The same thing applies to using a nut and a pair of vice-grips, not very practical for a tiny set-screw....

Bottom line is, it's only a suggestion of one more way to do the job.... everyone is welcome to use it or reject it....

I just made up one of these to shorten four 4-40 screws by a sixteenth. What a godsend! Job was done in a jiffy. Many thanks.

Brow ell' has a "Screw Cheker" they have sold for years. I think I used it a few times the way Bob has his tool made! See if I can find it after I get moved back from Abbotsford tomorrow.
