Depends a LOT on what ammo you shoot. The single shot guns are VERY light weight and if using heavy loads do kick.

Some trap loads today are very easily shot out of about any shotgun. With the Trap Shooting becoming an old person sport- ie: not a lot of young people picking it up and having to shoot hundreds - up to 400 or 600 shots in a long weekend event, the factory trap load recoil was reduced for these 'old' people. Thus, 7/8 ounce and 1 ounce 12 bore loads at about 1,100fps are becoming popular. Back in the 70's when I shot Trap, the load was 1 1/8ounce shot at 1,200fps. Then we thought they were soft kicking, light loads, but then I was young and my trap gun weighed 8 1/2 pounds.

I suggest you get some 7/8ounce or 1 ounce loads for that light 12 bore. It will be more fun when shooting clays.

hey thanks for the load tips! Its my first time shooting tomorrow so I'm getting pointers from the seasoned gents at the club. my wife is coming along to try as well. we've been members for a year already but mainly shot airguns.

my first time out I'm going to buy my shells from the club. so hopefully they have the load you suggested. they are lending me a browning over under but I got this for the wife to play with. light, dirt cheap and I read it's reliable being single shot break action.

I just greased the hinges some and tightened up the rear stock felt alittle loose in the action.
Any tips to smooth out the break barrel? feels very tight when I push he barrel release? I know you get what you pay for but if I can smooth it out some Id like to do it.

^^^ if it's new white lithium grease till it's broken in i guess, everything is a little tight when new nothing to worry about though

Those single shots are indestructible. Shoot it a whole lot and that will smooth out the break barrel.

just came back from sail. picked up some Berretta muffs, shot shell waste holder and butt pad lol.

FYI Bushnell range finders are on sale from $199.99 - $129.99. my brother picked one up while we were there.

so I had a blast shooting my first session. did 6/6 using a Remington 870 pump. I hit a several with my Baikal but that kick made me flinch lol. I also tried a browning xt very nice trap shotgun but it was way to heavy for me.

saving up for a Remington 870 now.

The Baikal single shot was my first 12g as well....a LONG time ago. Fore end is different and mine lacked checkering...bought it at CT for somewhere's around $75 as I recall.

Put a lot of rounds through it before it went down the road, got my first (and last) ducks with it...not bad basic shotgun. Area where fore end meets the receiver propper was galling on mine...took some cleaning up. Pop the fore end off and have a look.

7 1/2 and 9 shot work good on gophers...clears the whole mound.

I got it smoothed out like you mentioned. popped off the forestock and filed a tiny bit off the arm hook attached to the barrel. action opens smooth but the lever is still tight. it's looked new other then the wood and some marks on the barrel. I do like it! picked up some challenger shells for it.


I don't want to start a new thread. what's the main difference for the 870's. I see Remington offers the 870 express and an 870 sportsman, what are the main differences? the sportsman is not much more in cost.

The 870 sportsman is just a prettier 870 express. Nicer wood, checkering carved on the fore end and the stock. That's the only difference.

Is there one shotgun that could work well with, skeet, trap and 5 Stand?
