I recently purchased an Air Arms Alfa Proj target pistol.
The previous owner had purchased a new wooden grip and modified it to his hand and taste.
Unfortunately he was a little to aggressive with the dremel and penetrated through the grip in a few spots.
I made several attempts to fill the holes using wood filler, sawdust and glue etc etc - it never turned out
the way I wanted..........and it has to look nice to shoot good...........right!

I used masking tape to outline where I did not want to have the natural wood covered, and painted the rest
with a liberal amount of black Tremclad paint using a small artists brush.

I then used regular table salt and sprinkled the grip until it was well covered.
Important at this stage not to touch the salt - put the grip aside for 24 hours
to dry (resist the temptation to see if it worked !!!!)

After drying, give the grip a quick shake to remove any unattached salt crystals and spray - I used mat black - but
any colour works. Again put away for 24 hours - do not touch.

The results are a nice looking grip (no holes) and plenty of grip - a non slip surface
I have used the pistol many times with no sign of wear or salt crystals falling away.

I added extra weight (picked up at the local TSC store) - this allows a lot of adjustability.

Also added a barrel laser light - great for training.
Using the laser light with dry firing exercises help me a lot.

My question too? Why table salt?
I have used coarse sand and 777 3M adhesive spray to regrip a slippery grip. Now I use an automatic centre punch to stipple a grip for rifles or pistols.

Hi,
I used table salt as the particles are smaller than something like sea salt.
Probably sand would work - but the sand particles are smoother.
The table salt just seems to work well because of the irregular shapes, and the
paint adheres really well.

I have tried sand - but I think the feel from the salt is better..............

I unfortunately did not have enough wood material left to consider
using a centre punch or a press.

Table salt has irregular shapes? I thought table salt was 100% cubes. At least the 'free running' type is cubical, and of very consistent dimensions. The one time I've added something gritty to a pistol grip was 90X carbide lapping crystals. Sharp as heck. Turned out to be a bit painful actually. I've since heard that coarse play sand or landscaper's sharp sand work well, but I prefer a textured grip instead of grit or stippling so I carved my Pardini's grip with a shallow small gouge. Enough unevenness to make it easy to hold even with very sweaty hands on a hot day, but smooth enough to be comfortable. Still, innovative approach. Hope it works out well for you.

Gerard, your Pardini's grip is like a mould made from your hand. A true work of art! You should post that link again with the grip rotating!

Unfortunately never had the option to shape my grip - and have a
nice finish like this one.

Very nice grip Gerard.

Nothing to do with airguns. I use the server to host various forum-related files along with my website pages. I repair and build instruments, and the site is http://www.luthier.ca

I have used spray "flex seal" on a couple of my personal stock grips. It is durable and looks and feels great.
